Flames Quarter-Century Second Team: Sean Monahan

The NHL announced the Calgary Flames Quarter-Century team on Jan. 11, featuring several memorable names in franchise history.

Today, we want to examine Sean Monahan's tenure with the club and his credentials for the Flames' second team.

Monahan was the sixth overall pick in the 2013 Draft and made his NHL debut that fall. Skating in 75 games and scoring 22 goals and 34 points, he finished eighth in Calder Trophy voting.

During his second season, at age 20, Monahan became a 30-goal scorer for the first time, finishing with 31 while doubling his point production up to 62.

Over the next two seasons, he scored 27 goals in each campaign, earning 63 and 58 points. In 2017-18, Monahan had 31 goals and 64 points before setting career highs in goals (34), assists (48), and points (82) in 74 games during the 2018-19 season.

Unfortunately, injuries began to derail Monahan's promising career starting in 2019-20, when he skated in just 70 games. He finished the year with 22 goals and 48 points, a significant drop in production.

Moreover, that season would be the last time he scored at least 20 goals in a Flames sweater.

In the shortened 2020-21 season, Monahan played 50 games, scoring ten goals and 28 points before the NHL halted the campaign due to the pandemic.

Upon return, he played 65 games in 2021-22, tallying only eight goals and 23 points, his last season with the Flames before a trade sent him to the Montreal Canadiens.

During Monahan's nine seasons with the Flames, these were his totals and ranks among players over the past 25 years:

  • Games Played: 656 (5th)

As mentioned, Calgary dealt Monahan to Montreal on Aug. 18, 2022, with a first-round pick (2025) for future considerations. Here's an excellent breakdown for those interested in sorting out the conditions of this complicated trade.

While trying to play through a lower-body injury, Monahan skated in only 25 games, scoring six goals and 17 points during his first campaign with the Canadiens.

Fully healthy for the 2023-24 season, he regained his scoring touch, reaching 13 goals in 49 games before Montreal dealt him to the Winnipeg Jets, where he finished the year by scoring another 13 goals and 24 points while skating in five playoff games.

On July 1, 2023, Monahan agreed to a five-year deal with the Columbus Blue Jackets.
