Flames Quarter-Century First Team: Robyn Regehr

The NHL announced the Calgary Flames Quarter-Century team on Jan. 11, featuring several memorable names in franchise history.

Today, we want to look back at Robyn Regehr's tenure with the club and examine his credentials for being on the Flames' first team.

Initially drafted by the Colorado Avalanche as the 19th pick in the 1998 Draft, Regehr never played a game for the franchise as they traded him along with Wade Belak, Rene Corbet, and a second-round pick to the Flames for Chris Dingman and Theo Fleury on Feb. 28, 1999.

He made his NHL debut in 1999-2000, scoring five goals and 12 points in 57 games. Following that season, Regehr became a mainstay on the Flames blueline, never skating in less than 68 games over the next ten seasons.

Although he was never known as a goal scorer, collecting a career-high six in 2005-06, Regehr was a positive plus/minus player who never once accumulated 100 penalty minutes in a single season.

From 2000 to 2011, he averaged 21:36 a game and was never afraid to put his body on the line, whether blocking shots or being physical. Eventually, Regehr became part of the Flames leadership group, serving as an alternate captain from 2001 to 2011.

During the Flames run to the Stanley Cup Final in 2004, Regehr played in all 26 games, averaging 26:27 a game. He finished seventh in team scoring that postseason with nine points and was plus-7 with just 20 penalty minutes.

Regehr spent 11 seasons with the Flames, playing ten years in this century. These are his totals and ranks among players over the past 25 years:

  • Games Played: 769 (4th)

  • Assists: 127 (17th)

  • Points: 151 (25th)

  • Plus/Minus: Plus-32 (15th)

  • Penalty Minutes: 756 (2nd)

  • Hits: 844 (3rd)

  • Blocks: 590 (5th)

  • Average Ice Time: 21:36 (15th)

  • Awards: None

  • All-Star Games: None

  • Honors: None

In June 2011, at 31, the Flames dealt Regehr to the Buffalo Sabres as part of a package that included Alex Kotalik and a second-round draft pick for Chris Butler and Paul Byron.

He skated with the Sabres for 105 games before another trade sent him to the Los Angeles Kings, where he would win the Stanley Cup in 2014. One year after winning a championship, Regehr retired in 2015.

Thanks to his longevity, Regehr ranks fourth on the Flames' all-time games played list with 826, one of only five skaters to reach 800 games with the team. Interestingly, he's the only player on the top 15 games played list who didn't score 200 points.
