Flames' Projected Lineup & Notes Against Capitals - 1.28.25

The Calgary Flames (24-17-7) welcome the great Alex Ovechkin and the NHL's top team, the Washington Capitals (33-11-5), to the Scotiabank Saddledome for a Tuesday night matchup.

Tonight will mark the first meeting between the two clubs this season. Heading into the game, Alex Ovechkin is at 875 goals and needs only 19 to tie Wayne Gretzky's all-time mark of 894.

The Flames are 6-4-0 in their last ten games, falling to the Winnipeg Jets on Sunday by a score of 5-1. Meanwhile, the Capitals (7-1-2) are 2-1-0 on their Western Canadian road trip, recently losing to the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday, 2-1.

Between the Pipes

Dustin Wolf will look to continue his dominance at home, boasting a 12-2-1 record. He's only lost to the Nashville Predators, Bruins, and Jets at the Saddledome while producing a 2.54 GAA and .916 SV%.

Historically, Ovechkin has two goals against Wolf, both of which are powerplay tallies, which occurred on Mar. 18, 2024. He's only tallied two goals in the past five games and has eight career goals at the Saddledome, four of which have come on the power play.

At the other end, the Capitals will start Logan Thompson, who they just extended to a six-year deal worth $35.1 million on Monday. He's been brilliant for his new team, producing a 22-2-3 record with a 2.09 GAA and .925 SV%.

In his career against the Flames, Thompson is 3-2-0 in five games with 2.68 GAA and .924 SV%.

Conversation Starters

  • Tyson Barrie has been back in the lineup for the first time since Nov. 12. He was brilliant with the Calgary Wranglers on the weekend with three points. Will he have an immediate impact in his first game back, especially on the powerplay?

  • Wolf was solid against the Wild but gave up a couple of uncharacteristic goals in the dying minutes. Will we see a bounce-back performance in the friendly confines of the Saddledome?

  • The Flames didn't have much going against the Jets, with so many players going quiet. Who will be hungry for a goal or a nice play? Can Jonathan Huberdeau, Jakob Pelletier, or Matt Coronato find a way to get something past the red-hot Thompson?
