Flames Holiday Break Review: Blake Coleman
With the NHL holiday break starting early for the Calgary Flames, we're looking at each and every member of the franchise and what their season has been like so far. Today, we're profiling Blake Coleman.
There are no grades — this isn't high school — but these quick-and-dirty glimpses into their season illustrate where they're at ahead of the calendar flip from 2024 to 2025.
Name: Blake Coleman
Position: Winger
Stats: 8 goals, 9 assists, 17 pts, minus-3, 1 PPG, 1 PPP, 76 SOG, 10.5 SH%
Summary: Blake Coleman continues to be a vital component of the team's leadership group on the ice and in the locker-room. He's as versatile as forwards get, filling in on either wing and able to jump into the faceoff dot when needed as well.
The 33-year-old is well off pace from his career year last season — 30 goals and 54 points — but he could still flirt with the 20-goal mark for the second straight season as a member of the Calgary Flames.
Coleman has been known to go on streaks, and his three goals and six points during a five-game point streak during the home-stand handful before the break might be an indication of more production heading into the new year. The Flames could use it. The team has been getting production from a handful of players recently but scoring depth has been a problem all season.
His work ethic and competitive level on the ice is something just as valuable as any point production with the team focused on a youth movement. Players like Connor Zary and Matt Coronato don't have to look far to see an example of the kind of play needed for success.
Coleman's blend of scoring ability, defensive acumen, veteran leadership and all-around contributions make him a key player for Calgary as they navigate the challenges of the 2024-25 NHL season. Those same attributes may mean Coleman is a name discussed at the NHL trade deadline, with a $4.9-million AAV contract that expires after the 2026-27 season.
