Flames GM Craig Conroy Writes a Touching Tribute to Johnny Gaudreau and His Family

It took a day for Flames GM Craig Conroy to gather his thoughts and share his feelings on the loss of Johnny Gaudreau. In pain like many who were shocked to learn of Gaudreau's tragic passing, Conroy didn't feel that rushing to release a statement would truly reflect all the love he had for the former Flame and Columbus Blue Jackets forward.

Conroy thanked everyone for their patience and then expressed his deep sorrow and affection for Johnny and the entire Gaudreau family.

Conroy said he needed time to compose himself to express his love rather than focus on his own pain. He reminisced about the journey that began in 2014 when they flew to Philadelphia to bring a new superstar to Calgary. That's when "Johnny Hockey" was signed, and Conroy said, "Over the next nine years, I had the privilege to have a front row seat to watch this young boy mature into a true NHL star but more importantly, to grow to be a wonderful man, son, husband, and father."

Conroy also reflected on the special bond formed with Johnny's parents, Jane and Guy Gaudreau, noting how they embraced Calgary and became beloved figures in the community.

Conroy talked about how important family was to the Gaudreaus. "We know of all his accomplishments, becoming a father and husband was by far the one he was proudest," the GM noted.

Addressing the profound loss of both Johnny and his brother Matthew, Conroy said that no words could ease the pain people are feeling. However, he talked about how important it is to share love and support with the Gaudreau family during this difficult time.

Conroy concluded by extending his heartfelt condolences to Johnny's wife Meredith, their children Noa and Little Johnny, Jane and Guy, sisters Katie and Kristen, and Matthew’s wife Madeline, assuring them that Calgary will always welcome them with open arms.
