Flames expected to send Jarome Iginla's No. 12 to rafters on March 2

It’s been off limits as is, but the Calgary Flames will officially make certain that no other player will wear No. 12 for the franchise when it announces Thursday that Jarome Iginla will have his digits retired in March.

The franchise leader in goals (525) and the only player in its history to record over 1,000 points in a Calgary sweater, Iginla is largely considered the greatest Flame of all time and is an obvious choice for a banner raising.

Originally a first-round pick of the Dallas Stars, Iginla spent 16 seasons with the Flames — and led them to one Stanley Cup Final — before being dealt to the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2013. He signed with the Boston Bruins the following season before agreeing to the three-year deal with the Colorado Avalanche in 2014. He was traded to the Los Angeles Kings in his final season with the Avs and took his final strides in the NHL there before officially announcing his retirement in 2018.

In what’s shaping up to be a special season for the first-place Flames, Calgary’s ceremony for Iginla is expected to take place ahead of its March 2 game versus the Minnesota Wild.
