Flames Defenseman Becomes 27th Player With A Birthday Goal

During the first period of Tuesday night's Calgary Flames and Anaheim Ducks game, defenseman MacKenzie Weegar scored a first-period goal with 56 seconds left.

Although the goal gave the visitors a 1-0 lead, it wasn't overly memorable. However, Weegar was in the right place at the right time, deflecting home his fifth goal of the season on his 31st birthday.

In front of his mom in Southern California on the Flames' annual mom's trip, Weegar became the 28th player in team history to score a goal on their birthday.

He's the third active player on the roster with a birthday goal behind Jakob Pelletier (Mar. 3, 2024) and Mikael Backlund (Mar. 17, 2021).

Interestingly, Weegar is now the sixth oldest player with a birthday goal but shares the spot with several other 31-year-olds, including Alex Tanguay (2010), Olli Jokinen (2009), Joe Mullen (1988), and Lanny McDonald, who had a hat trick on his 31st birthday in 1984.

Unsurprisingly, McDonald leads all Calgary players with seven birthday goals, lighting the lamp in 1983, 1984 (hat trick), 1985 (two goals), and 1987.
