Five things to watch in Paris on Thursday, Aug. 1

PARIS — From judo action to Evan Dunfee's quest for another racewalking medal, here are five things to look out for at the Paris Olympics on Thursday, Aug. 1:

---

JUDO ACTION

Toronto judoka Shady Elnahas will be in action in the men's 100-kilogram elimination Round of 16. Elnahas made his Olympic debut at the Tokyo Games, where he finished tied for fifth in the same event. In 2023, Elnahas finished fifth at the world championships and won gold at the Pan American Games in Santiago.

SHOOTING HOOPS

Canada will be looking to rebound from a 75-54 drubbing by France in their Olympic opener on Monday as they prepare to play Australia in the group phase of women's basketball. It will also be a busy day for Canada's 3x3 women's basketball squad, which will play a pair of games in pool-round action. Canada, which opened Tuesday with a 22-14 win over Australia, will tip off against Germany in the morning before facing France in the afternoon.

---

MEDALLIST BACK IN ACTION

Canadian fencers will square off with France in the women's team foil competition. Canada's side, considered a medal threat, features bronze medallist Eleanor Harvey of Hamilton. Harvey made history on Sunday when she won the country's first-ever medal in the sport with her performance in women's foil.

DUNFEE WALKS INTO ANOTHER GAMES

Race walker Evan Dunfee, of Richmond, B.C., will try to capture a medal in the 20-kilometre event after taking home his first piece of Olympic hardware at the Tokyo 2020 games. Dunfee captured Canada’s first-ever Olympic medal -- a bronze -- in the longest athletics event three years ago, the 50-kilometre race walk. A new mixed event replaces the men's 50-kilometre race in Paris.

QUARTERFINAL BOXING

Top-seeded Canadian boxer Wyatt Sanford of Kennetcook, N.S. will face Uzbekistan's Ruslan Abdullaev in the quarterfinals of the men's 63.5-kilogram. Sanford was impressive in his Olympic debut with a dominant victory over Bulgaria's Radoslav Rosenov in the Round of 16 Monday.
