Reigning Big Ten champion Maryland won 31 games last season, added four top-30 prospects and enters the new season ranked sixth in the nation in the AP women’s Top 25.

Division II Bluefield State went 2-23 last season, returns only two players from that team and is just hoping its freshman-laden roster can climb a few rungs in its league standings this year.

Everything about Wednesday night’s women’s basketball exhibition matchup screamed blowout, yet hardly anyone would have expected this one-sided an outcome. Maryland clobbered Bluefield State 146-17, a 129-point margin of victory that only scratches the surface of how much of a mismatch this contest was.

1. The Terps held Bluefield State without a point the entire second half, outscoring the Big Blues 72-0 in the third and fourth quarters. Of the 20 shots Bluefield State missed during the second half, 11 came from behind the arc

2. Disruptive, energetic defense from Maryland forced 51 turnovers, including 10 apiece from a pair of Bluefield State freshman guards. The Terps received credit for 35 steals and led 85-0 in points off turnovers.

3. Three Maryland players outscored Bluefield State by themselves. Freshman guard Blair Watson scored 29 points on 12-for-19 shooting in her college debut, while senior guard Shatori Walker-Kimbrough and Baylor transfer Ieshia Small both tallied 18 apiece.

4. Were this an official contest, Maryland would have obliterated the NCAA’s Division I record for margin of victory in a women’s game. Grambling set that record in 1986 with a 139-37 win over Jarvis Christian College.

5. Believe it or not, the score could have been worse. Maryland attempted 32 free throws and made only 19 of them.

Why would either side schedule this game given the obvious talent discrepancy? The answer to that question is not immediately clear. Bluefield State coach Todd Fong did not immediately respond to an email sent by Yahoo Sports on Thursday morning. Maryland assistant director of media relations Rose DiPaula said she was trying to reach Terps coach Brenda Frese to confirm whether Fong or some of his players had ties to the area.

Frese called the game “a good tuneup” when speaking to reporters in College Park on Wednesday night.

“We have so many new players between our freshmen and Ieshia Small,” Frese said. “We played with a lot of enthusiasm and played really hard. A lot of great things and we got rid of those jitters.”

Perhaps Frese felt this was a “good tuneup” for her team because Maryland’s second exhibition game has the potential to be an even bigger blowout. On Sunday, the Terps host Division III Mary Baldwin College, which went 0-24 last season.

Godspeed, Fighting Squirrels. Here’s hoping you stay within 100.
