The five biggest stories from a rain-drenched Week 2 of high school football in South MS

Week 2 of high school football on the Mississippi Coast was wrapped in rain but it didn’t fail to bring entertaining and intriguing results.

Upsets, near-upsets and surprising blowouts took center stage with several unexpected outcomes. We take a look at the biggest stories of the week here.

Crab Trap Surprise

Sources confirmed to the Sun Herald there were no pigs on the field ahead of storm-soaked 29th edition of the Crab Trap Trophy rivalry between Bay High and St. Stanislaus.

In a series dominated by the Rock-a-Chaws in recent history, it seemed all the pieces were in place for the Tigers to retake control. Instead, it was SSC who maintained its stranglehold on the rivalry with a stunning 27-0 win. St. Stanislaus rushed for over 200 yards and held The Bay to just 60 total yards of offense with four turnovers.

Brayden McDonald, Henry Nunmaker and Stephen Hutchinson each ran for over 50 yards for the Rocks.

Bell Blowout

Don’t let the two-score margin deceive you, the Battle for the Bell was over in a hurry. George County served up a 50-burger in a 51-36 win over rival Greene County, scoring 44 of its points in the first half.

Five-star quarterback Deuce Knight threw five touchdown passes, and two of them came within the Rebels’ first three plays. The defense came through, as well, forcing multiple turnovers. That included a strip sack by TJ Love that Blaine Green returned 80 yards for a score.

George County’s 84 points through the first two weeks are the most since opening the 2016 season with 93 points between wins over Gautier and Greene County.

Rain Warriors

Rarely does fortune favor anyone more than it does a run-it-down-your-throat high school football team playing in a torrential downpour. Such was the case for the hand-off-heavy D’Iberville Warriors against an athletic, spread-‘em-out Gautier Gators team.

D’Iberville dispatched the Gators with ease, 33-12, just a week after GHS toppled the Warriors’ 7A region roommates Harrison Central. D’Iberville was in complete command, controlling the game from the ground where the Warriors averaged 6.9 yards a carry.

Andre Crosby tallied 122 yards and he was spelled by Jayquan Havard’s 97 yards and Jeremiah Butler’s 82. D’Iberville is 2-0 for the first time since 2021, when it last made the playoffs.

Tomcat defense strong in losses

Stone is 0-2 to begin the new season for the third year in a row, but at least there’s a pretty significant moral victory to build on going forward.

The Tomcats held a potent Poplarville offense to just two scores in a 13-7 loss one week after limiting Biloxi to just 15 points. Stone’s offense has been stuck in the mud and unable to take advantage of its defense. It was shutout by the Indians and lost three fumbles against the Hornets.

Stone has a week off to work on it before back-to-back road games at St. Martin and Quitman.

Fourth quarter fatigue strikes Greyhounds again

Ocean Springs has faced two of the state’s best teams in each of its first two games and was in a position to win in both matchups. The Greyhounds had defending champions Oak Grove tied in the fourth quarter, but just like last week when OS was knotted with Madison Central in the final quarter, it couldn’t seal the upset.

The Warriors found the end zone twice down the stretch to send the Greyhounds home with a 35-21 loss. Ocean Springs got another hot start from its defense this week. It shutout Oak Grove in the first quarter and aided a two-score comeback in the third with a scoop-and-score.

But that unit has 10 new starters and the lack of experienced depth once again proved to be an issue in the closing act. The Greyhounds are 0-2 for the first time since 2019.
