Lazio are working to complete a deal to sign midfielder Cesare Casadei today according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

The January transfer window is now into the final few days, and Chelsea still have a lot of work to do, although this is usually the stage where things start to pick up.

Chelsea are yet to sign anyone or make any sales with the only departure of note Renato Veiga’s loan move to Juventus, although a deal has been agreed with Strasbourg for Mamadou Sarr, who will join in the summer for €15m.

The Blues are looking to bring in an attacker before Monday’s deadline day, but they also have a number of players they are looking to move on.

Casadei falls into that category and this is a saga which has been dragging on since the beginning of the window, with a deal still not closed.

The 21-year-old has attracted interest from a host of clubs in Italy, with Lazio and Torino showing the most interest.

Torino officials flew into London earlier this month to try and close a deal but were unable to, and as things stand Casadei is still a Chelsea player.

Lazio are close to finalising a deal, but as of Wednesday they still hadn’t reached a full agreement with Casadei on salary.

Romano has now provided another update on the transfer saga, with a deal now seemingly very close with Lazio.

He took to X.com and said:

“Lazio are working to get Cesare Casadei deal done with Chelsea and player side today.

“Final proposal in excess of €13m with sell-on clause included.  Lazio would also discuss 2002 born CB Abakar Sylla (Strasbourg) in separate deal.”

Casadei joined Chelsea from Inter Milan in the summer of 2022 in a deal worth an initial £12.6m, but struggled to establish himself in the first team , and had loan spells at both Reading and Leicester.

A return to Italy makes sense for all parties and will give Casadei the chance to play first team football, with Chelsea set to benefit financially whenever he decides to leave his next club.
