Will Army play Navy in football in a baseball stadium in the near future?

Navy athletic director Chet Gladchuk told the Baltimore Sun that both Fenway Park in Boston and Yankee Stadium in New York City have submitted bids to host the iconic rivalry in 2018.

Rumors of Fenway’s interest in the game ramped up Wednesday as a picture in a tweet showed the big screens at the stadium touting the rivalry.

Army beat Navy at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia in 2016. The game will be played there again in 2017, but the future site hasn’t been determined. Philadelphia has hosted 87 of the 117 games played so far, though the rivalry has been rotated through New York, Baltimore, Washington DC and even Chicago and Los Angeles once each. Per the Sun, Philly, Gillette Stadium, the Meadowlands and other stadiums are bidding for the 2018 (and beyond) rights too.

Both baseball stadiums have gotten familiar with hosting football games in recent years. The Pinstripe Bowl has been played at Yankee Stadium since 2010. Fenway hosted its first major college football game in 2015 when Notre Dame played Boston College. Connecticut and Boston College will play at Fenway in 2017.

While playing the game at either stadium will be a cool event, neither site has the capacity that a football stadium like Lincoln Financial Field or M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore does. Yankee Stadium seats just less than 50,000 while Fenway seats approximately 38,000 people.

The Sun reported the announcement of the game site will come in May.
