'I Felt Like I Had A Little Bit More To Give': Frederik Andersen, Rod Brind'Amour On Shutout Win

The Carolina Hurricanes took care of business Tuesday night, defeating the New York Rangers 4-0 at Madison Square Garden.

Andrei Svechnikov scored twice and Sebastian Aho and Seth Jarvis also each picked up a goal. Mikko Rantanen and Taylor Hall earned their first points as Hurricanes and Frederik Andersen stopped all 22 shots he faced in the win.

After the game, Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour, along with Andersen, spoke with the media in New York. Here's what they had to say:

On Taylor Hall:
He was dominant... not dominant, but he was noticeable every shift and that's what we need out of him. If he can continue to do that, we've got a real good player there.

On Andrei Svechnikov's defensive effort tonight on top of the goal scoring: That's part of it, we all have to do that. I think there was a couple tonight where Rants had one too in the third and those are the difference. That's the difference between winning and losing. There were a couple of good plays there tonight made on the offensive end, but also on defense. You have to do both.

On the second goal: It wasn't a great power play. Butchered it and actually gave them the better looks, but then that was a transition goal. I think with the players we've added, we're probably going to see a little more of that kind of stuff versus the other way we had been playing. So there's a little transition going on here, but we get open ice with the players we've added and I think you're going to see a little more of that.

On the way the team came out in the third period: It probably put a bit of a dagger in there when we score right away like that and then I liked the way we played the rest of the period. We gave up only one really good chance to Zibenajad there, a breakaway, but other than that, they really didn't have much. That's the way you have to play it.

On the turning point: That second goal could have went... that's hockey, right? Come down on one end and you don't execute and then oh, there's your game. That's the difference in the game, really, probably even in that play. Other than that, it was probably even. A lot of chances really early, back-and-forth grade-A chances, not really how you want to do it, but we walked out of here with two points so we're happy.

On having four different goaltenders register a shutout this season: I'm not sure that's a good stat, you know. Oh boy, I don't want to do that again. I don't want to be on that list. That's a lot of stress on everybody. But it does say a little bit about the group, I think. That we can figure it out. Nice to have the top guys back though.

On if the shutout can be just the boost Frederik Andersen needs: I hope so. I mean, listen. We all know it's a little bit of pins and needles when he's out there because you just don't know what's going to happen there with the history, but we know that when he's healthy, he's solid and we know how important that position is.

On Riley Stillman: He was good tonight. He hasn't played all year for us. It's nice to see him in there. I remember him as a little kid skating on the ice. Time flies.

On Riley having already had one more fight as a Hurricane than his dad did: He's got a ways to go to beat his dad in the other stuff. You know what, for seven minutes, he was impactful.

Frederik Andersen

On the game:
It's obviously good to make the saves. Obviously a good team we faced and they've been stringing together a little stretch together and so our focus was coming out and putting our best foot forward right away and obviously the guys delivered some good shifts right away. The lead is huge in games like this where you can build on it. Like in the third, we really shut it down and didn't really let them get a sniff on coming back in this game, so it was nice. Obviously a lot of really good plays. I'm bad at remembering who makes the good plays, but there were many of them throughout the game where they had a chance and the guys came back with a stick or something and broke up the plays. It was fun.

On the team's backchecking: That type of stuff is obviously huge. A good defensive game, but a good offense is just as important if not more on our team and we appreciate that type of effort.

On the save of Chris Kreider: He stopped it and then was kind of laying there and I just tried to get something over there. He had probably a little more time than he realized and sometimes you just have to get a good bounce like that at certain times of the game. You just try to throw whatever you have over there and hope for the best.

On what he likes best about the way things have been going as of late: We like having our effort be the most important thing. Those types of efforts and that type of hustle is huge. That's number one for us, the competitive nature and obviously we have many players that when the effort is there, it's going to open up some chances to score and we have the skill to bury them. Tonight was good.

On the shutout: It's always good to get more game action obviously. I felt that the first two games were nice to win and stuff, but obviously I felt like I had a little bit more to give and that I could knock off the rust a little more and keep it going, but obviously not get too far ahead of myself. Today was just about focusing on the first period and the first shift and then taking it from there.
