Felix Unger Sorum A Driving Force For Team Sweden

Team Sweden, who won silver last year at the World Junior Championship, still remain one of the top teams in the tournament and that's evident by the fact that they're one of the final four teams remaining.

They handedly won all of their round-robin games and then held off a later push by Team Latvia to advance past the quarterfinals.

While the Swedes have a lot of good pieces, it's obvious that one of their top players has been Carolina Hurricanes prospects Felix Unger Sorum.

The 2023 second-round pick leads all forwards in points (7) and ice time (19:40 per game) in five games for Team Sweden.

He's been dynamic with the puck, especially on Sweden's lethal power play, and he's been able to slow the game down and find seams and plays that normally you wouldn't think would be there.

It's clear that the 19-year-old forward is one of the more talented players at the tournament and perhaps that's because he's one of the few players with pro experience.

Unger Sorum has played 22 games for the Chicago Wolves of the AHL and he has two goals and seven points in those games.

While that's a bit of a low scoring total, it reflects how difficult that transition can be for a lot of younger players, especially when coming over from Europe.

"I've see a couple of his games and I've thought he's looked really good as you would expect," said Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour on Unger Sorum's WJC tournament. "The pro level, whether it's the AHL or NHL, is a different game. You're playing against men and it's hard. And then you put him back to where his age group is and you forget that he's just a teenager and then you go, 'Oh, wait a minute. He's a dominant teenager.' We got a good one there, we just have to realize that it might take a little time just for him to get a little stronger. When you have the hockey sense, there's a lot of potential."

That was also evident with Bradly Nadeau who led Team Canada in scoring before they were bumped in the quarterfinals.

Unger Sorum will have a chance to continue showing out as the Swedes take on Team Finland today, Jan. 4, at 3:30 p.m. EST. The game will be broadcasted on NHL Network and TSN.

The winner will advance to the goal medal match on Sunday and face the winner of Team USA and Team Czechia who play at 7:30 on Saturday.

The losers will faceoff in the bronze medal match.
