Ray thankful to those who got him through healthy season

OTTAWA — In the aftermath of American Thanksgiving, Argos quarterback Ricky Ray showed his gratitude for his offensive line with the purchase of a gift card to The Keg.

“Just to say thank you for everything they’ve done for me this year, and congratulate them on a great season so far,” said Ray following Wednesday’s practice at the University of Ottawa. “They do a lot for me — I stand in there dropping back, and they’re working their tails off to keep me clean back there.”

The veteran Toronto pivot also fielded questions on his Grey Cup opposite number — Calgary’s Bo Levi Mitchell.

“He’s a clutch guy that finds a way to win — everything you want in a quarterback,” said Ray. “I think we lost more games this year than he has in his career as a starter, (that’s) how clutch he is, how consistent he can play.”

Seated at the podium alongside star receiver S.J. Green, Ray admitted he never thought he would have the chance to work on the same side as one of the CFL’s most athletic receivers.

“Typically when you have one great player like that, they play for one team and that team never lets them go,” explained Ray. “I knew what kind of player he was, and (when he came to Toronto) I wanted to earn his respect and be able to make plays with him.”

Green echoed his quarterback’s remarks, and reflected on Ray’s longevity under centre.

“I really wanted to come in and earn Ricky’s respect,” said Green. “When I came in 2007, there were three elite quarterbacks in the league — Ricky, Anthony (Calvillo) and Henry Burris — (and) the chance to finally play with Ricky, to play with an elite quarterback, that chance doesn’t come very often.”

Green, Ray and co. will have to be on their A-game against one of the league’s top defensive units come Sunday.

“They’re a good group, a veteran group,” said Green. “They communicate well, (and) it’s going to take us being disciplined in our details and finding holes in their defence.”
