Fans surround track on cool down lap at Australian Grand Prix
Australian Grand Prix winner Sebastian Vettel and the other competitors got a surprise on the cool-down lap following Sunday’s season-opening Formula 1 race.
After Vettel took the checkered flag for Ferrari’s first win since 2015, fans got out of their seats around the Albert Park course in Melbourne and rushed trackside to get an up-close glimpse of Vettel and his peers.
This isn’t normal. Look at how close the fans with the Ferrari flag got to one of the cars on the track’s final turn.
Andrew Westecott, the boss of the Australian Grand Prix, said an investigation is ongoing into what happened to allow the fans to get on the track before the cars had made it to pit lane. The cool-down lap is the lap immediately following the checkered flag, where drivers slow their cars down before parking them in the pits.
“From what I am led to believe, there could have been a mistake made in the signals as to when people could exit onto the track. That is being investigated, so I won’t speculate on the outcome of that until I have all the facts.
