Family names all five children after Toronto Maple Leafs 'grinders'

The great thing about having kids is that, like with pets, you can name them anything,

Granted, unlike with pets, they can eventually reject their monikers and shave their heads and claim you’re the root of all of their problems because your Jedi-loving idiot brain named them ‘Tatooine Jakku.’ But in the short term, it’s pretty cool.

Misty and Dave Amey of Kingston, Ont., decided that they would use their parental rights to honor their favorite hockey team, the Toronto Maple Leafs.

First came Justice Tucker, 11, named after Darcy Tucker, and clearly the Ameys have a sense of irony.

Next came Angel McCabe, 10, named after Bryan McCabe and, let’s face it, so far these are sort of a cheat on the whole naming convention thing. (Unless “Angel” is a reference to our Sweet Hockey Angel, Phil Kessel, a Stanley Cup Champion.)

Then came Domi, 9, named after Tie Domi, and no doubt the person you want on your side at the playground.

Then came Colton Orr, 5, who will have to come up with an alibi for “Colton” after claiming his middle name originated from Bobby.

Now, on Oct. 27, little Kadri Lee Amey was born, named after Leafs center Nazem Kadri. Wow, and that was decided even before he shut down McDavid!

Five kids, five Leafs. But why these Leafs?

From the Toronto Star:

“Those guys, they don’t get all the recognition but they do the grittiest, the grindiest work out on the ice, night in and night out,” Dave said. “I don’t want to knock the superstars like the Kessels, the Crosbys, but it’s not about the name on the back. You play for the logo on the front and that’s what I felt those players did the best.”

Eh, too bad. Auston’s a pretty name for No. 6.

Congrats to the happy family. And by that we of course mean “congrats on naming your kids after Maple Leafs and refusing to give in to the pressure of calling any of them Dougie or Wendel.”
