Manchester United are reportedly looking to sign a new left-back as this is a position they need to strengthen this summer.

Tyrell Malacia had knee surgery last summer and it is now over 13 months since the 24-year-old last played in a competitive game for United.

The Netherlands international has also been left out of Erik ten Hag’s squad for their pre-season tour of the United States as he continues to recover from injury.

Luke Shaw is an excellent option but he was also limited to just 12 Premier League starts last season due to fitness issues.

Recent reports suggested the Red Devils are keen to sign former Barcelona star Marcos Alonso.

But Fabrizio Romano reports the Premier League giants haven’t made any move for the 33-year-old.

The reputed journalist said on his YouTube channel on Wednesday night:

“We had rumours on some players. As of today, Marcos Alonso’s camp has not received any approach from Man United. No negotiations.”

Alonso’s name is unlikely to bring a lot of excitement for United fans as he is well past his best years.

The left-back made over 200 senior appearances for Chelsea, with his time in London seeing him lifting the Champions League and Premier League trophies.

But he failed to make an impact at Barcelona after joining the club in 2022.

The 33-year-old was limited to just five La Liga appearances last term, and he was allowed to leave at the end of his contract.

Signing him wouldn’t involve a transfer fee and that could be the main reason United are keen to secure his services. Otherwise, he wouldn’t represent a quality addition at all.
