Fabrizio Romano confirms Raphael Varane has “said yes” to Como as he closes in on Serie A move

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed that former Manchester United defender Raphael Varane is just one step away from sealing a transfer to newly-promoted Serie A club Como.

Varane left Old Trafford following the expiry of his deal with the club in June.

He failed to reach an agreement with the club over the terms of an extension and so both parties eventually elected to part ways.

The World Cup winner’s last United game was the Wembley FA Cup final, in which Erik ten Hag’s men prevailed against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

On that occasion, United’s goals were grabbed by teenage duo Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo.

Late last month, Romano divulged that Varane was the “dream target” for Como, who secured automatic promotion to Italy’s top flight after finishing in second place in Serie B.

It was subsequently relayed that the Frenchman jetted to Italy to hold “face-to-face” talks with the club regarding a potential move.

More recently, it emerged that Como were growing in confidence regarding their prospects of landing Varane ahead of any other suitors.

It seems that their charm offensive was successful, according to an update provided by the reliable Romano.

Romano wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “Raphael Varane says yes to Como proposal! The deal is on the verge of being completed.”

“Project approved but it will take some days to review the contracts then subject to medical… and then, here we go.”

“Cesc Fabregas, key for this deal.”

The expectation is that Fabregas will continue working under the stewardship of Osian Roberts, who turned down the chance to take the Wales national team job.
