Gary Neville aims dig at Pep Guardiola after FA Cup third round draw pits Salford against Man City
Salford City co-owner Gary Neville aimed a cheeky dig at Pep Guardiola after the League Two side were drawn away to Manchester City in the third round of the FA Cup.
The Premier League champions have lost six and drawn one of their past seven matches and their hopes of retaining the title took a battering with Sunday’s 2-0 defeat at runaway leaders Liverpool, which ended with home supporters taunting Guardiola with chants of “you’re getting sacked in the morning.”
Neville took his cue by posting a message about Guardiola on X after Monday night’s cup draw which read:
He's getting sacked in the morning @SalfordCityFC
— Gary Neville (@GNev2) December 2, 2024
Salford, who are 15th in English football’s fourth tier, were taken over 10 years ago by Neville and his former Manchester United team-mates in the Class of 92 – brother Phil, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt, David Beckham and Ryan Giggs, so will be more motivated than most to achieve an improbable upset.
Curtis Tilt, the Salford City captain, said of his side’s trip to the Etihad: “Absolutely delighted, couldn’t have asked for anything better really. We wanted United for the owners of our club but we’ll take City. We’ll go there and see if we can cause an upset.”
Arsenal face holders United
In a draw unusually rich with engaging storylines, the two most decorated teams in FA Cup history will go head to head at the Emirates Stadium after 14-time winners Arsenal were drawn against Manchester United.
Ruben Amorim’s new club can equal Arsenal’s record by retaining the trophy Erik ten Hag won last season, but they have one of the toughest starts imaginable with a trip to London in January.
Accrington Stanley will face the club they were unfavourably compared to in a 1980s milk advert in another appealing David versus Goliath tie at Anfield, while Chelsea are at home to Morecambe, currently the bottom club of the 92 in League football.
Two teams from non-league remain, both from the National League, and the draw was kinder to Tamworth who will host Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham, hoping their current run of beating the best teams before faltering to inferior opposition continues into the new year.
Andy Peaks, the manager of Tamworth, said of the upcoming visit of Tottenham: “Happy with the draw, we wanted it to be at home. A Premier League club – the magnitude is absolutely brilliant, wo we are delighted with that. The town will be absolutely buzzing for it. It will be sold out and there will be a great atmosphere. It is one I really look forward to.”
Dagenham and Redbridge make a short trip to south London to play Championship Millwall. “It could be a tough tie,” said Dagenham’s manager Ben Stevens. “It will be a great game. great occasion for the football club and not too far away.”
It was also a dream draw for this season’s League Two debutants Bromley FC, who appear in the third round for the first time in their 132-year history. They will be travelling north for a first ever match against Newcastle United.
Harrogate, who are 17th in League Two, make the short trip to Championship high fliers Leeds United. Simon Weaver, the Harrogate manager, said: “It’s an amazing draw for us. What an experience it’s going to be – Elland Road. We won’t need an overnight stop, which will please the board. It could be an absolutely magical experience for the boys.”

FA Cup third round draw
Hello and welcome to coverage of one of the great occasions in the English football - the third-round draw of the FA Cup.
Fans of National League club Tamworth would have gone to bed dreaming of being drawn against a Premier League team after beating League One Burton on penalties on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Bromley will play in the third round for the first time in their history after fighting back to beat Solihull 2-1 in a replay of last season’s National League play-off final.
Dagenham and Redbridge will also fly the flag for the National League after getting the better of League Two AFC Wimbledon.
Manchester United are the FA Cup holders after they shocked Man City in the final. Last month, Tyrell Malacia revealed Casemiro gave his FA Cup winners’ medal to him after missing most of last season through injury.
“Of course, I wanted to be there to support everyone but, for me, the most difficult part was to be up there with the guys (for the trophy presentation), because I wasn’t part of the team during the whole process,” he told The Athletic.
“I was like, ‘I’m staying down here and you guys just enjoy it, then I’ll see you in the dressing room’. He [Casemiro] was like, ‘Nah, you have to go up there as well’. And if someone with that kind of experience tells you that, you’re listening.
“They [the squad] said, “At the end of the day, you’re still part of the team.” I’ve been in a dressing room the whole season and seen everything.
“They know how hard I’ve been working every day to come back to the team and everything, so they said you deserve it as much as we do.
“Like I said before: if he gives you that [medal], you just listen!”
