Former Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Patrick Cutrone is enjoying a career best start to the season, scoring twice on Sunday to help Como earn their second consecutive Serie A win by beating Verona 3-2.

Cesc Fabregas’ side have climbed to 10th in Serie A with eight points as a result of their two wins and two draws from their first six league games, and Cutrone’s four goals during this opening stretch to the season proved a crucial contribution for the newly-promoted outfit.

Cutrone relishing record start

Cutrone’s brace as Como beat Verona 3-2 increased his scoring tally to four goals in total, a figure he had never reached after just six games in any of his top-tier experiences in his career, whether it was in Serie A, Premier League with Wolverhampton or LaLiga with Valencia.

Cutrone’s previous best career start had dated back to 2017/2018, when he scored two goals in his first two Serie A games of the season with Milan, but had to wait until his 15th league appearance to bag a third.

Since then, he has never scored more than four goals in a top-tier season, netting just two from 12 Premier League games with Wolverhampton in 2019/2020 and failing to score in seven LaLiga games played for Valencia.

Cutrone’s arrival at then-Serie B side Como in 2022 represented a turning point in his career, as he scored 23 goals throughout two seasons in the second division to help Fabregas’ side earn a historic promotion to Serie A.

The Italian striker has started all of his side’s six league games this season and he also put his name on the scoresheet during the Coppa Italia first round that saw Como eliminated by Sampdoria on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
