Former Roma assistant coach Salvatore Foti reflected on his time at Jose Mourinho’s orders in the Italian capital.

In an interview with Secolo XIX, Foti remarked, “Mourinho and I got along very well in Rome, he told me that he would ask me to go with him to the next team.”

“There’s a good feeling, we’re two very direct guys. And the relationship has grown, fueled by results, we have lived strong experiences together, and they inevitably unite you, I feel his trust, we are good together,” said Foti, who worked for Roma from 2022 until Mourinho’s departure in January 2024.

“I believe there is a lot of envy towards him, ever since the treble with Inter. In the Giallorossi we managed to play two European finals in a row in two and a half years, the first one we won and the second everyone saw how it was lost: the Roma fans will remember them even in 30-40 years, I don’t know when it will happen again.”

“And then when we left we saw how difficult it is to get to the final in Europe. Yes, we were ninth in the standings but 5 points away from 4th place and with 7-8 injured players to recover. I think Mourinho deserved a totally different farewell, I’m sorry for how it ended but the relationship with the club’s owners had deteriorated.”
