Ex-Oilers Surprising Addition To Big Trade

EDMONTON -- There's never a dull moment.

The Edmonton Oilers were not in action last night, but one team that was made headlines.

In case you live under a rock, the Colorado Avalanche, Carolina Hurricanes, and Chicago Blackhawks made a three-way trade. When the dust settled, here is how things ended up.

Blackhawks received:

  • 2025 3rd Round Pick (Carolina)

Avalanche received:

  • Martin Necas

  • Jack Drury

  • 2025 2nd Round Pick (Carolina)

  • 2026 4th Round Pick (Carolina)

Hurricanes received:

  • Mikko Rantanen

  • Taylor Hall

I believe we like to call that a blockbuster.

This deal is a huge win for the Hurricanes. They are poised to become an Eastern Conference powerhouse for the rest of the season. Mikko Rantanen has been one of the most productive offensive players in the league over the last several years. Taylor Hall is a great middle-six player who should perform well in a secondary-scoring role.

Fans hopes and dreams of a reunion with the former Oilers forward have now been dashed. However, it might be for the best.

Yes, Hall still has a pep in his step and can skate well, but he might not fit the Oilers' needs.

In 46 games, Hall has recorded 24 points while averaging 14:59 per game. He's on pace to finish the season with 43 points.

It's possible that Hall could see a bump in that rate of production. The Hurricanes are a shot-volume team and Hall is averaging the worst shots-per-game of his career this season (1.8). He could finish the season north of 20 goals if he starts shooting a lot more and continues scoring on 10 percent of his shots.

It will be interesting to watch the repercussions of this deal unfold in the coming weeks. Although it's quite early to see a deal of this magnitude, the Hurricanes took their opportunity.

As I said, there is never a dull moment.
