Ex Inter Milan Sporting Director Claims: ‘Atalanta Serie A Title Contenders, But Inter Still Favourites’

Walter Sabatini believes that Atalanta are contenders for the Serie A title, but that Inter Milan are still the favourites.

The former Nerazzurri and Roma Sporting Director gave his thoughts on the title race in an interview in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

Yesterday, two of the main teams in the Serie A title race were in action.

Reigning Italian champions Italy cruised to a 3-1 win over Parma. They showed not just their quality but also their tactical maturity and control to take three points at home.

Then, Atalanta responded with a home win of their own. Gian Gasperini’s men beat Inter’s city rivals AC Milan in front of their fans, with Ademola Lookman scoring a late winner.

This means that Atalanta are still three points ahead of Inter in the table, albeit with the Nerazzurri having a game in hand.

Meanwhile, Napoli will be feeling the pressure ahead of their Serie A clash with Lazio tomorrow.

Sabatini: “Atalanta Contenders For Serie A Title, Inter Still The Favourites”

Former Inter Sporting Director Sabatini said that the title race is “Brilliant.”

“With so many competitive teams, there are sure to be surprises right to the end.”

“Atalanta are contenders to win the title,” Sabatini predicted. “They’re a strong team aware of what they can do.”

“They just have to avoid becoming prisoners of superstition,” he added. “The word Scudetto can me uttered, and they have to believe in it.”

However, Sabatini does not see La Dea as title favourites. “No,” he said. “The most competitive team is still Inter, in terms of their quality and their squad.”

“But then unexpected things can happen. Like Milan’s resurrection before they fell back down in Bergamo.”

“And Napoli are also a strong side,” Sabatini said.

“I think Juventus will also start taking points soon,” he added. “They can be a bit sluggish and struggle to fin goals, but they always play well.”

“Beyond that, I really enjoy what Fiorentina, Lazio, and Bologna are doing,” Sabatini said.
