Ex-Greyhounds Goalie Gets Win Over Former Team; First Win With The Kingston Frontenacs After Rough Start
Last week, the Kingston Frontenacs shipped out three draft picks and goaltender Nolan Lalonde to acquire Charlie Schenkel from the Soo Greyhounds.
Schenkel's start with the Frontenacs has certainly been bumpy, having been pulled in his first two starts and allowing ten goals on 46 shots.
That's not what the doctor ordered for Kingston, but he had a second chance at redemption to get his first victory in the black and gold against his former team on Friday night.
Charlie's first start with Kingston was against the Greyhounds on Jan. 10. He was pulled after allowing five goals on 31 shots through two periods.
It wasn't a great start, but the team allowing over 30 shots through 40 minutes is not sound defense. Kingston would go on to win the game 6-5 thanks to an overtime winner by Pittsburgh Penguins prospect Emil Pieniniemi.
It was Schenkel's first start at home with the Frontenacs on Friday and his teammates in front of him played a much more detailed and structured game.
He faced only 16 shots and less than seven shots in each period. However, the game didn't start in his favor, after a point shot hit off of the Greyhounds forward Noel Nordh and trickled across the line.
Kingston locked it down after that. University of Vermont commit Cedrick Guindon scored his team-leading 24th of the year to get the ball rolling before Tuomas Uronen and Maleek McGowan scored later in the game to seal a 3-1 victory for Schenkel's first win in a Frontenacs uniform, fittingly against his former squad.
McGowan had been out of the lineup for over a month with an injury. The Toronto, Ontario native quickly reinstated his presence with a shorthanded insurance marker early in the third period.

Can Schenkel start to get the ball rolling in net for Kingston and solidify their goaltending heading into the playoffs? Or will he continue to struggle with his new team down the stretch?
