Ex-Bruins Forward Named Under-The-Radar Trade Candidate

The Boston Bruins reunited with Danton Heinen last season, and it was a move that benefitted both the player and the team immensely. After successfully earning a contract with the Bruins through a professional tryout (PTO), the 2014 fourth-round pick had 17 goals, 36 points, and a plus-16 rating in 74 games last season. Overall, he proved to be an excellent bargain addition for the Bruins.

Due to his strong 2023-24 campaign with Boston, Heinen landed a two-year, $4.5 million contract with the Vancouver Canucks in free agency this summer. Since joining Vancouver, he has not been able to replicate last season's production.

In 47 games, Heinen has six goals and 17 points. He has also been struggling offensively as of late, posting just one point in his last 10 games.

Harman Dayal and Chris Johnston included Heinen in their "NHL trade candidates under the radar" list for The Athletic, noting that the former Bruin "hasn’t found his fit in Vancouver." They also noted that Canucks added Heinen with the expectation he would be "a quality top-nine winger," but he has since been buried in their bottom six.

If the Canucks make Heinen available, there could be some interest out there, given his past success and playoff experience. In addition, as he showed last season with the Bruins, he can produce well offensively when playing at his best. However, any potential suitors would need to be okay with the fact that he would be more than a rental, as he is signed until the end of next season.

Nevertheless, it will be fascinating to see if Heinen ends up getting moved by the Canucks.
