Ex-Bruins Forward Named New Blackhawks Captain

The Chicago Blackhawks have announced that former Boston Bruins forward Nick Foligno will be the team's 35th captain in franchise history.

Foligno's selection as the Blackhawks' new captain is not surprising in the slightest. He thrived in a leadership role last season and was an excellent mentor for young players like Connor Bedard. Because of this, he will now be rocking the 'C' in Chicago as they continue their rebuild.

Foligno has experience as a captain, having sported the 'C' with the Columbus Blue Jackets from 2015-16 to 2020-21.

This is notable news for the Blackhawks, as this is the first time the Original Six club has had a captain since legend Jonathan Toews' departure after the 2022-23 season.

Overall, while the Blackhawks could have chosen Bedard as their next captain, picking Foligno was probably the right move. Foligno has already shown that he can handle the pressures of being a captain. In addition, picking Foligno will allow Bedard to continue to adjust to the NHL before taking over as the club's future leader.

In 124 games with the Bruins over two seasons, Foligno had 12 goals, 39 points, 311 hits, and a plus-5 rating.
