The 2023 MLB draft features 20 rounds across the three days, including the first two rounds, compensatory rounds and competitive balance rounds on the opening night of the draft.
The Pirates, Washington Nationals and Oakland A's had with the highest odds (16.5 percent each) to get the No. 1 pick by virtue of having the three worst records in 2022. The Pirates had the first pick, the Nationals landed the second, the A's the third.
After the Pirates picked LSU pitcher Paul Skenes first, Washington selected LSU outfielder Dylan Crews with second pick. LSU became the first school to have two players go back-to-back to start an MLB draft.

When and where is the 2023 MLB draft?
The draft starts Sunday, July 9 at 7 p.m. ET with Rounds 1 and 2 in Seattle at Lumen Field -- home of the NFL's Seattle Seahawks. Rounds 3-10 start at 2 p.m. ET Monday, and Rounds 11-20 start at 2 p.m. ET Tuesday.

What is the first round order of the MLB draft?
The first six picks in the draft were determined at MLB’s inaugural Draft Lottery held at the Winter Meetings in December. The Pirates won the lottery and hold the first pick in the draft for the second time in three years. Starting with the seventh selection, the remaining order is determined by the reverse order of finish at the close of the previous season among the remaining non-postseason teams. The Dodgers and Mets had their first pick pushed back 10 spots because they went over the competitive-balance tax threshold.
