Former Blue Emmanuel Petit has backed Chelsea to compete for the title this season and highlighted how strong their squad is.

The Blues have a had a great start to the season and Sunday’s win against Aston Villa moved them back into the top three, level on points with Arsenal in second.

Enzo Maresca has exceeded expectations at this early stage of the season and Chelsea have lost just two of their 13 league games so far.

Maresca’s impact will have taken many by surprise and he’s been able to quickly instil an identity and style of play, both of which were missing last season.

Chelsea’s main aim this season is to get back into the Champions League having not been in it for the past two seasons, and they remain on track to achieve that.

The Blues are currently nine points behind leaders Liverpool and despite Maresca playing down talk of a title race on numerous occasions it hasn’t stopped people talking about it.

Former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan believes the Blues are best placed to challenge Liverpool this season and has them ahead of Manchester City and Arsenal.

For Chelsea’s young team it feels like it’s a year too early but with the way this season is going you can’t rule anything out.

Former Blue Petit has shared his thoughts and feels Chelsea can’t be ruled out and backed the Blues to provide the toughest test for Liverpool.

“I was with another former player [Gary Neville] the other day and they said Chelsea have no chance, but I disagree,” he told The Evening Standard.

“I look at the schedule and they have a very favourable run and have also played against almost every big team so far this season.

“There is no easy game in the Premier League and there’s a long way to go, but right now I’d have to say Chelsea are dark horses as they have been excellent under [manager Enzo] Maresca. The way they have transformed this season is magnificent, I will not put them away for the title.”

“Everyone is forgetting that Chelsea have the strongest squad in the Premier League and with other clubs playing in the Champions League and every three days, they have a really strong opportunity to make up ground. It’s only December so do not count them out yet.”
