A clinical and efficient first half from Everton is enough to pick up a result at Goodison Park, with the Toffees beating Tottenham 3-2 after a three-goal opening period. Looking to exploit Spurs’ high line right from kick-off, Gueye picked the opposition midfield apart with two assists in the opening half-hour, playing Calvert-Lewin through on goal after 13 minutes, before leading Ndiaye into the penalty area, with the winger lashing a left-footed finish past Kinsky 17 minutes later. An unfortunate own goal late in the half from Gray would give the Toffees a rare three-goal lead at the break; which would turn out to be unassailable, despite drama in the final quarter-hour. Kulusevski’s clipped finish against the run of play gave the visitors some hope with just under 15 minutes to go, before a late sliding finish at the back post from Richarlison would cut the deficit to just one deep in added time. It was too little, too late for Postecoglou’s team however, as they would run out of time and see their comeback attempt fall at the last hurdle. Everton only produced 0.32 of their 2.03 total expected goals in the second half but saw out the win - staying 16th ahead of a match with Brighton on January 25. Spurs managed an xG of 1.11 - scoring twice - but it wasn’t enough for a point, which keeps them in 15th before games against Hoffenheim in the Europa League on Thursday and Leicester City in the Premier League next Sunday. That concludes our commentary of the Premier League fixture between Everton and Tottenham, we hope you’ve enjoyed it!

Pickford launches the ball down the pitch, with Gray not dealing with the pressure properly, sending his hooked clearance off the face of Calvert-Lewin, which puts the striker through on goal, but Kinsky is quick off his line to swipe the ball away.

Everton vs Tottenham Hotspur

15:51

Tottenham have just seven minutes to find two more goals and salvage a result, though you feel that even one more would start rattling Everton’s nerves late on. After a poor spell to start the second period, Postecoglou’s changes look to have sparked some life back into Spurs, though their goal seems to be an outlier today.

Everton vs Tottenham Hotspur

15:48

Both Everton and Spurs have lost their first two Premier League matches of 2025. The Toffees have lost their first three league games in a year six times before – doing so in 2022 and 2023 most recently – while Spurs have only done so twice in their history (in consecutive years in 1993 and 1994).

Goal Dejan Kulusevski

15:41

Spence slips past Young before pulling a cross back for Richarlison just ahead of the byline. Seemingly all alone, the Tottenham striker is beaten to the delivery by a sliding Branthwaite, who pokes it out to Maddison 20 yards from goal. Without time to take a touch, he hits a curling first-time shot, but he sends it high and wide of the target.

Spence and Son work a short-corner routine out to Maddison looking for an alternate angle to deliver a cross, but Everton’s defence step forward in unison to deny the trio space, with Gueye eventually dispossessing the Tottenham full-back inside the 18-yard box.

Everton vs Tottenham Hotspur

15:31

Mykolenko and Lindstrom stand over the deadball but it’s the latter who takes it, sending his delivery skipping across the face of goal but without a team-mate in the area, it’s allowed to bounce behind harmlessly for a goal-kick.

Everton vs Tottenham Hotspur

15:30

Maddison’s pass from inside the centre-circle is telegraphed and easily intercepted by Ndiaye, who interchanges with Doucoure before receiving a kick to the ankle from Bergvall, which gives Everton yet another set-piece.

Everton vs Tottenham Hotspur

15:28

Kulusevski’s loss of possession just outside Everton’s penalty area gives the hosts the chance to hit on the counter, with Calvert-Lewin dragging his side up the pitch before spreading play out to the left for Ndiaye. The winger holds up play before laying it off to Mykolenko, whose first-time shot from 20 yards out is skewed high and wide.

Everton vs Tottenham Hotspur

15:26

Porro’s outswinging corner towards the near post is hit in search of Sarr, but Calvert-Lewin beats his opponent to the ball to clear his lines, before Ndiaye is taken down by a reckless Maddison - giving Everton a free-kick.

Everton vs Tottenham Hotspur

15:24

Maddison floats a diagonal into the penalty area from a position in the left channel, but it’s easily dealt with by O’Brien, under no real pressure.

Everton vs Tottenham Hotspur

15:23

Moyes, who recently returned as Everton coach after almost 12 years away, beat Tottenham 2-1 last season while in charge of West Ham; the last coach to beat Postecoglou in the league with two different teams was Takahiro Shimotaira in the Japanese J1 League, winning with Kashiwa Reysol and Yokohama FC.

Everton vs Tottenham Hotspur

15:20

WIDE! Lindstrom clips his free-kick to Calvert-Lewin, who meets the cross 16 yards from goal but sends his glancing header just past the far post!

Everton vs Tottenham Hotspur

15:20

Davies mistimes his tackle, charging through the back of Calvert-Lewin, who was looking to receive Doucoure’s pass in midfield before holding up play. It’s a free-kick for the hosts in a central position almost 40 yards from goal, with as many as seven Everton players waiting on the edge of the penalty spot to attack the delivery.

Everton vs Tottenham Hotspur

15:18

Sarr receives Gray’s pass out from the back and immediately goes long for Maddison, but the forward is unable to find the space for a shot thanks to quick recoveries from both Gueye and O’Brien, before Lindstrom wins a clever free-kick to win back possession.

Everton vs Tottenham Hotspur

15:17

Spurs’ change at the interval looks to have changed their shape to a 4-2-3-1, with Spence and Porro operating as full-backs either side of Gray and Davies. Bergvall pairs with Sarr in midfield and Maddison, Kulusevski and Son will look to supply Richarlison in attack.

Everton vs Tottenham Hotspur

15:14

Kulusevski shapes a left-footed cross from the right wing but it’s met by Tarkowski on the edge of Pickford’s six-yard box, before Mykolenko nods it out of play for a throw.

Tottenham’s lengthy injury list does not leave Postecoglou with many first-team options to change things up from the bench, with Reguilon and Richarlison the only real senior players fit and available. Richarlison did net twice at Goodison Park last year and his presence would certainly help their rather lacklustre attack, while Everton will be looking to keep things tight and organised in search of a first Premier League clean sheet since December 22. Patterson or Young could be useful to add fresh legs to the flanks, while Beto is capable of holding the ball up and bringing others into play should the hosts wish to add to their already overwhelming lead.

Everton vs Tottenham Hotspur

15:00

An entertaining display at Goodison Park reaches its halfway point, with Everton taking a deserved three-goal advantage into the half-time interval after a clinical display of incisive, attacking football that ended with an xG of 1.66 (compared to Spurs’ 0.34). Realising Tottenham were going to keep their defensive line high up the pitch, the Toffees immediately looked to expose the gaps in behind, with Tarkowski and Gueye constantly hitting balls over the top in search of Calvert-Lewin. The trick would come off after just a dozen minutes, with Calvert-Lewin getting on the end of Gueye’s pass before wriggling free of defenders to slot a finish past Kinsky. Postecoglou continued to urge his side forward after conceding the opening goal, with Son twice presented the opportunity to test Pickford - only to be denied by the goalkeeper and Tarkowski’s sliding tackle. The wasted chances would lead to a second for the hosts, with Ndiaye using his left foot to lash a finish past Kinsky on the half-hour mark to double Everton’s advantage. Two bookings and a lengthy injury delay for Dragusin caused a stop-start final quarter-hour in which Spurs weren’t able to build much momentum, but their inability to deal with defensive set-pieces would cost them late, as Lindstrom’s second-chance cross following a corner put Tarkowski and Calvert-Lewin in position to force Gray into a rather unfortunate own goal.

GREAT SAVE FROM KINSKY! Lindstrom’s low, whipped free-kick drops perfectly for Tarkowski on the edge of the six-yard box, but the centre-back’s diving header is stopped by the chest of the Tottenham goalkeeper, before the ball is ushered behind for a corner!

Everton vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:52

Spence catches Lindstrom rather cynically on the right flank, swiping to take the winger’s legs out from underneath him - giving Everton a free-kick in a dangerous position.

Everton vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:51

Everton against Tottenham Hotspur at Goodison Park is the most drawn fixture in Premier League history, with 17 of the 32 meetings ending level. Each of their last five clashes has been drawn, with no exact fixture ever finishing level six times in-a-row in the competition.

Everton vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:47

The fourth official indicates seven minutes will be added to the end of the first half for stoppages, with Dragusin still down on the pitch being tended to by members of Tottenham’s medical department.

Everton vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:46

Dragusin will require a bit of treatment on the pitch, with a cut over his eye from the elbow to the face leading to a stream of blood pouring out from his face. The stoppage will no doubt lead to a healthy dose of added time at the end of the period, which is fast approaching.

Mykolenko whips the ensuing free-kick from deep on the left into the penalty area, but Porro does just enough with his volleyed clearance to force Everton back into midfield.

Everton vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:41

Bergvall leans in and throws Calvert-Lewin to the ground with a forearm, before arguing the call with the referee, which earns the midfielder a yellow card.

Everton vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:40

Worrying signs for Moyes as play comes to a halt for Gueye, who is down inside the centre-circle in need of some attention from the medical department. The delay will serve to break up play and force Tottenham to build momentum once again, with five minutes to go in the opening period.

Everton vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:39

Showing his work rate at both ends of the pitch today, Gueye beats Gray to Porro’s leading pass towards the byline, before keeping possession ahead of a pressing Kulusevski to win a free-kick with which to clear his lines.

Everton vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:37

This is the first time since February 2022 against Leeds United that Everton have scored twice in the opening half-hour of a Premier League game at Goodison Park.

Everton vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:36

Tottenham’s pursuit of an equaliser has put them into an even deeper hole, with the visitors now two goals behind - thanks in part to their high line. Postecoglou’s side have managed three goals or more in three of their last seven Premier League matches (what they’ll need at this stage to take three points today), though they lost in two of those three contests.

Everton vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:34

Bergvall hits a speculative first-time effort from 20 yards out after receiving Kulusevski’s pass, but the young midfielder curls his shot over the crossbar.

Everton vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:31

Goal Iliman Cheikh Baroy Ndiaye

Everton vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:31

Branthwaite is a bit lucky to escape without conceding a foul after clumsily bringing Son to the ground inside the 18-yard box, but referee Darren England sees nothing wrong with the incidental contact as he allows play to continue with Everton in possession.

Everton vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:28

OFF THE POST! Ndiaye feeds the ball through for Mangala, who is unable to corral it as he slides to push it off Dragusin. The ricochet falls kindly to Calvert-Lewin, who squares it to Mangala, but the midfielder’s first-time shot is pushed onto the woodwork by Kinsky! Lindstrom manages to keep it in play before hooking a cross back into the 18-yard box, but Calvert-Lewin’s header is easily caught!

Everton vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:27

CALVERT-LEWIN MISSES THE CHANCE TO DOUBLE HIS TALLY! Tarkowski again exploits Tottenham’s high line with an incredible lifted pass for Calvert-Lewin, who struggles to settle the bouncing ball as he gets into the penalty area. The striker looks to take a touch off his knee before finishing from close range but it gets away from him, allowing Kinsky to recover!

Everton vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:26

AN OPPORTUNITY WASTED! Porro gets into Everton’s half and splits the defence with a threaded ball through for Kulusevski, who receives it before squaring an unselfish pass across the face of goal for Son. With time and space, the captain hits his shot from the penalty spot at the first time of asking, but Pickford is equal to it - getting low quick to make a two-handed save!

Everton vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:24

Son’s inswinging corner to the far post is hit in search of Dragusin, who is marked closely by Branthwaite, but a diving Pickford manages to get a flapping hand to the ball to push it away from the Tottenham centre-back.

Everton vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:22

Though Tottenham have managed to come from behind to take points in the Premier League in four of their 11 attempts (three wins and one draw), they have not managed to do so away from home this campaign, losing in each of the four games on their travels where they’ve conceded first.

Everton vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:21

WELL-TIMED! Davies goes long from deep inside his own half, looking to pick out the run of Son. It’s an inch-perfect delivery that finds the captain perfectly in stride but he’s unable to test Pickford, with Tarkowski’s tackle dispossessing the striker eight yards from goal!

Everton vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:19

Tarkowski floats a lovely pass forward for Calvert-Lewin, who is unable to get a shot away thanks to the presence of Dragusin. He instead looks to bring Lindstrom into the play, with the winger firing a low shot towards the goalkeeper’s near post, but an offside in the build up gives Tottenham the ball.

Everton vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:18

Calvert-Lewin's goal ended his 16-match run in the Premier League without one, with today's strike his first in the competition since September 14, 2024 against Aston Villa.

Lindstrom steps across to intercept Bergvall’s forward pass for Son before storming forward to set Everton away on the counter-attack. After reaching the edge of the 18-yard box, the Everton winger centres a pass for Calvert-Lewin but it’s Ndiaye who latches onto it, curling a shot towards goal that’s blocked at the outset by Dragusin.

Everton vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:11

The hosts are finally allowed to restart play, with Lindstrom whipping a corner-kick into the six-yard box from the left, but it’s met first by Son before Spence whacks the ball out of play hurriedly for an Everton throw.

Everton vs Tottenham Hotspur

14:10

Play is stopped ahead of an Everton corner due to an apparent issue with one of the match officials. It appears the linesman had left his post temporarily after an issue with his communication device, but after a moment he retakes his place to allow the match to continue.

Lindstrom steps inside from the right flank before cutting back to shift the ball onto his right foot to hit a venomous shot towards goal that’s pushed away by a diving Kinsky.

Son sends his inswinging corner to the near post, just over the head of Mykolenko, but Calvert-Lewin is back to do his defensive duties and helps his team-mate by clearing the danger.

Everton vs Tottenham Hotspur

13:37

All the positivity surrounding Tottenham’s back-to-back clean sheet wins against Liverpool and Tamworth in the League Cup and FA Cup respectively were dashed on Wednesday, when Arsenal came from behind to beat Spurs 2-1 in the north London derby, handing them their fourth Premier League defeat in five games. Just one place ahead of today’s opponents - albeit seven points in front - Ange Postecoglou’s side can still look up the table, with a victory potentially taking them as high as 12th by the end of the weekend.

Everton vs Tottenham Hotspur

13:31

David Moyes’ return to Goodison Park as coach of Everton after an almost 12-year absence did not go quite as planned, with Ollie Watkins’ lone strike handing the Toffees their third Premier League defeat in-a-row - all without scoring a goal - which keeps them two places and one point outside the relegation zone. Despite an attacking output that is better only than rock-bottom Southampton (15 goals scored in 20 matches), Everton have been impressive at the back, with only Liverpool, Arsenal and Nottingham Forest conceding fewer than their 26 strikes conceded.
