Everton vs Arsenal LIVE: Premier League result and final score as James Tarkowski stuns title favourites

Everton leant heavily on their Burnley connection for a first win since October as Sean Dyche’s reign as manager got off to the perfect start with a 1-0 win over Premier League leaders Arsenal.

The ex-Clarets boss insisted he did not have any “magic dust” to sprinkle on a struggling squad - the only one not to be strengthened by a January signing - but the effect he had was immediate as another former resident of Turf Moor James Tarkowski headed the winner on the hour.

It was the centre-back’s first goal since joining from Burnley on a free in the summer - and his first since the opening day of last season - and ended a run of no wins in 10 matches in all competitions.

The great escape is most definitely on for Everton, who by virtue of their lunchtime kick-off, briefly moved out of the relegation zone with hope springing eternal at Goodison after 12 miserable months under previous manager Frank Lampard.

Defeat was Arsenal’s first since September, and only their second in the league, and opened the door for Manchester City to close the five-point gap at Tottenham on Sunday.

Everton savour Sean Dyche effect to stun Premier League leaders Arsenal

14:42 , Jamie Braidwood

The only Premier League club not to make a signing in the transfer window may have done some excellent business in January after all. This was the Sean Dyche effect, an auspicious introduction for the new manager, a wonderful start to his rescue mission. Perhaps Everton are not doomed after all. Perhaps Arsenal, after amassing 50 points in the first half of the season, will not cruise to the title.

Because, after eight defeats in nine games, Everton got a first victory since October. After their longest run of losses at Goodison Park since the 1950s, they beat the league leaders. After the protests against the board came the backing for the team. Appointed on Monday, Dyche had his first win on Saturday. Even by Everton’s standards, it has been a remarkable week.

This is how close Everton got to taking the lead against Arsenal.

HALF TIME! Everton 0-0 Arsenal

13:23 , Jamie Braidwood

An entertaining first half at Goodison Park, which has not followed what the form book would have suggested. Everton have put in a real fight under Sean Dyche and took the game to the Premier League leaders. They had three clear chances to take the lead in a competitive first half, but Arsenal also went close through Saka.

It’s probably the worst Arsenal have played all season, but Everton deserve credit for that.

Everton 0-0 Arsenal

13:10 , Jamie Braidwood

38 mins: OFF THE LINE! So close from Saka! Zinchenko whips a deep cross from the left that Saka meets on the volley. He guides the shot towards the far post but Coady reads it and hacks away, with Pickford beaten!

Coady read that so well, dropping back to the line as Saka shaped to shoot.

Everton 0-0 Arsenal

13:09 , Jamie Braidwood

37 mins: The match settles down again after that flurry of chances. It’s somehow still 0-0, and Everton have come closest to taking the lead so far. They’ve been the better team.

32 mins: CLOSE! Everton should be ahead! It’s brilliant from Onana, who opens his legs and strides away from Odegaard down the left wing. He takes it into the box and squares for Calvert-Lewin, who can’t reach the ball as he slides in!

Everton 0-0 Arsenal

13:02 , Jamie Braidwood

29 mins: Chance! Arsenal’s best opportunity of the match so far. Saka does well on the right and feeds the ball back inside to Nketiah. The striker works a yard of space with a good first touch, bursting away from Tarkowski. The angle was tight but Nketiah lashes high and wide, failing to test Pickford.

Given his form, you’d expect a lot more from Nketiah there. Arteta certainly did, as he turns away in disappointment.

Everton 0-0 Arsenal

12:59 , Jamie Braidwood

27 mins: Saka is being booed every time he touches the ball. The winger looked for Nketiah with a cross after Partey switched play, but Coady heads clear. Calvert-Lewin then does well to hold the ball up and get Everton up the pitch.

Everton 0-0 Arsenal

12:57 , Jamie Braidwood

24 mins: Calvert-Lewin tries the snap-shot from the angle, but it’s saved by Ramsdale. After Arsenal clear Onana tries his luck from distance and isn’t too far away. Everton then press Arsenal high up the pitch and win it back well. The Gunners are in a real fight here against the Premier League strugglers.

Everton 0-0 Arsenal

12:53 , Jamie Braidwood

22 mins: Arsenal clear the third corner but it’s quite obvious already that this is a Dyche team. Calvert-Lewin then heads wide at the front post.

Everton 0-0 Arsenal

Everton 0-0 Arsenal

12:49 , Jamie Braidwood

17 mins: Saka is still squinting but he’s back on and continuing.

Everton 0-0 Arsenal

12:48 , Jamie Braidwood

16 mins: Saka has a problem, after catching an outstretched hand from Gueye into his left eye. The Arsenal medical team are looking at it on the pitch.

Everton 0-0 Arsenal

12:45 , Jamie Braidwood

13 mins: The game is set up well, and the Everton crowd are well up for the challenge of taking on the Premier League leaders. An early Arsenal goal would be important, but Everton look organised.

Everton 0-0 Arsenal

12:42 , Jamie Braidwood

11 mins: Saka rolls the ball back to Partey on the edge of the box. The midfielder goes for his trademark side-foot shot, but Pickford is equal to it.

Everton 0-0 Arsenal

12:41 , Jamie Braidwood

8 mins: Half chance for Everton as McNeil is allowed to carry the ball forward. His shot is deflected and almost breaks into Calvert-Lewin’s path, but Ramsdale gets out well to smother. Calvert-Lewin may have been offside anyway.

Arsenal respond with a counter-attack, but it doesn’t come to anything.

Everton 0-0 Arsenal

Everton 0-0 Arsenal

New Everton manager Sean Dyche wants to “remodel” the club but his first priority is finding reinforcements in the final few hours of the transfer window.

The former Clarets boss, who has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract, is looking to bring in a couple of players in the next 24 hours to bolster a squad low on confidence which has just lost Anthony Gordon to Newcastle but has yet to have any new additions this month.

“Straight away I was working with Kevin (Thelwell, director of football) about the lists, the players. We’ve already had a look at some,” he said.
