Everton scored two late goals to sink Crystal Palace, who were left to rue Luka Milivojevic’s second half penalty miss.

The Serbian’s second-half spot-kick was thwarted by Jordan Pickford after Wilfried Zaha had been fouled in the box by Seamus Coleman, and means the Eagles miss the chance to climb away from the danger zone with some tough games coming up.

Substitutes Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Cenk Tosun made the midfielder pay with two late goals to leave Palace winless in four games heading into a tough run.

Palace boss Roy Hodgson made one change, bringing in Cheikhou Kouyate for Andrew Ayew and returning to a two-man forward line of Zaha and Andros Townsend that served the club well last season.

Marco Silva, meanwhile, made two changes as £27million summer signing Andrew Gomes, who joined from Barcelona, was finally handed his debut – coming in for Tom Davies – while Seamus Coleman’s name got a huge cheer from the Goodison Park crowd as he made his return from injury.

And it was the Irish right-back who had the game’s firs chance, blazing over from the edge of the box as the Toffees made a bright start. James Tomkins then made a Bobby Moore style challenge in the box on Richarlison to deny the Brazilian an excellent chance.

Down the other end, Palace, looking for only their third win of the season, had to rely on Everton giving them chances as Andros Townsend was nearly let in via a sloppy Kurt Zouma backpass but Coleman nipped in to clear.

The Eagles grew into the game come the half hour mark and Townsend then turned provider, crossing for Tomkins who nodded wide. Meanwhile, Wilf Zaha continued to attract ire from the home fans for being fouled as Everton players too it in turns to kick lumps out of him. From the nth foul just outside the box Milivojevic forced Jordan Pickford into a good save low down.

Kouyate then came even closer, sending a header onto the bar with Pickford scrambling, only to see it bounce back down onto the line and away.

Richarlison, who had been quiet for most of the opening half, headed a corner just over before Sigurdsson had Hennessy sprawling to his left but sent an effort just wide as the first 45 minutes came to a close goalless.

Michael Keane headed over early in the second before Milivojevic went into the book for a clumsy late challenge on Richarlison. Spurred on by the home fans, who came to life after the break having been quit in the first half, Everton press forward with Lucas Digne’s drive almost being deflected into his own net by Tomkins.

Palace had a huge chance to open the scoring on the hour when Zaha was fouled in the box by Coleman but Milivojevic’s penalty down the middle was saved by Pickford’s foot.

Hennessey then saved well from Theo Walcott down the other end as the game sprung into life, with the home side wanting a spot kick of their own for a wayward arm on Sigurdsson in the box but referee Anthony Taylor waved play on.

Gomes curled a low show inches wide of Hennessey’s post as Everton, buoyed by the penalty miss, pushed for a last winner. Silva threw on Cenk Tosun, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Ademola Lookman late on to try and break Palace down.

And it paid off as two of them combined with Calvert-Lewin nodding in Lookman’s cross with three minutes left to win it. Tosun then raced clear to add a second minutes later.

The result takes Everton up to eighth but leaves Palace 15th, just three points above the drop with Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham and Manchester United their next four games.
