Euro giants plot move for player who Graham Potter wants as first January signing
West Ham United could be dealt another transfer blow this January, with one of their key targets touted for a move to Ligue 1.
The Hammers have been linked with plenty of strikers this month, but they’ve struggled to land any of their primary targets.
The Irons submitted a club-record £57 million offer to sign highly rated Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran but were immediately rebuffed.
They switched their attention to Elye Wahi but missed out again as he opted for a move to Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt.
West Ham are still hoping to sign a striker before the January window closes and have opened talks with the likes of Ajax’s Brian Brobbey, RB Leipzig’s Andre Silva, Nottingham Forest’s Taiwo Awoniyi, and Brighton & Hove Albion’s Evan Ferguson.
Graham Potter has reportedly prioritised a reunion with Ferguson at the London Stadium, but West Ham need to act fast with a host of European clubs in the mix.
Marseille eyeing move for Ferguson to replace Wahi
Marseille head coach Roberto De Zerbi has been vocal about the need to sign a new striker after Wahi’s move to Frankfurt.
The French club could pour more misery on West Ham this month as Foot Mercato reports that they have set their sights on a move for Ferguson.
The Irish international broke out at Brighton under De Zerbi’s leadership, netting six goals in 19 Premier League appearances at the age of 18.
Although injuries have disrupted his momentum this season, Ferguson’s powerful and physical style, combined with his technical ability and aerial prowess, aligns perfectly with De Zerbi’s brand of football.
Ferguson has struggled for playing time under Fabian Hurzeler’s leadership, paving the way for a mid-season exit.
Brighton don’t want to lose him permanently, so they’re more likely to sanction a loan deal, and West Ham need to get there first.
The Hammers have already failed with moves for Duran and Wahi.
Potter wants Ferguson as his first January transfer. It’ll be a massive blow to the Hammers if they miss out on the talented striker.
