When are the Euro 2024 last 16 ties? Every confirmed fixture

After two gruelling weeks for 24 teams in Germany, we now have our confirmed last 16 fixtures for Euro 2024.

We have lost eight teams after the conclusion of an enthralling group stage, many of whom are unlikely to be a significant miss in the knockout rounds. Yes, Scotland, Poland and Serbia, we're talking about you.

Kicking off on Saturday, there are eight ties to enjoy in the first round of knockout fixtures at this summer's tournament. The majority of Europe's giants have avoided one another, but that certainly hasn't dampened a tantalising set of last 16 battles.

Here is a closer look at the Euro 2024 last 16 schedule.

Switzerland vs Italy

The last 16 gets underway on Saturday afternoon following two agonising days without any Euros action. It's Switzerland - who knocked out then world champions France at this stage of Euro 2020 - and Italy that meet first.

Can Xherdan Shaqiri pull out another wonder strike to deny the reigning European champions the opportunity to retain their title? Scotland supporters will tell you that that's a distinct possibility, with Switzerland's 'Expendables' having proven a handful in the group stage. Granit Xhaka is doing his best Sylvester Stallone for perhaps one last job at the Euros.

But Italy are Italy. Not always beautiful to watch - that was certainly the case in the group stage - but normally pretty effective in the knockout stages of major tournaments. The Azzurri won Euro 2020 after beating Austria, Belgium, Spain and England after the group stage, with three of those victories coming after extra-time or penalties. You simply can't write them off.

Germany vs Denmark

Had it not been for Niclas Fullkrug's stoppage-time equaliser against Switzerland in Germany's final group stage match, the hosts would have been playing reigning champions Italy. Instead, they face a slightly more palatable battle with 1992 European champions Denmark.

Germany have been one of the best two teams at the tournament, with the wonderkid duo of Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz getting supporters purring. Despite a difficult few years for Germany, they seem to have found their stride, with a little help from Julian Nagelsmann and a home crowd.

Denmark, who were semi-finalists at the last Euros, will not be looking forward to a clash with Germany in Dortmund. Had they managed to beat Serbia, they would have avoided the hosts by topping Group C. But that didn't come to pass, with Denmark still yet to lose or win at Euro 2024.

England vs Slovakia

Insomniacs listen up, England play this Sunday. Get yourself a warm glass of milk and a comfy seat, it won't be long until you arrive in slumberland.

Having topped the group by the skin of their teeth, just beating out a winless Denmark and Slovenia, England were handed a favourable last 16 tie. Slovakia will be their opponents in Gelsenkirchen, the arena in which they claimed their first and only win of Group C. Gareth Southgate has the unenviable task of re-energising a nation that are one backwards Kieran Trippier pass away from lobbing their remotes through the TV screen.

For the neutrals, this is unlikely to be a thriller. Slovakia have been similarly tame in the final third, although they have scored three goals to England's two. They're likely to sit deep, soak up pressure and attempt to recreate their heroic 1-0 win over Belgium.

The winner of England vs Slovakia will take on the victor of Switzerland vs Italy.

Spain vs Georgia

Having been drawn into a potential 'group of death', Spain made light work of their opening three matches at Euro 2024. Having swept Croatia and Italy aside, Albania arguably posed La Roja their sternest test of the competition so far. They are the only team with a perfect record, all without conceding a single goal.

There is only likely to be one winner when Spain take on Euro 2024's lowest-ranked side Georgia. However, a victory over Portugal in their final group game has shown that the debutants are more than capable of mixing it with top teams.

Having said that, Spain and Georgia met twice in qualifying for this summer's competition, with La Roja winning both matches by an aggregate score of 10-2.

A quarter-final clash with Germany or Denmark is the prize for the triumphant side in this last 16 duel.

France vs Belgium

According to FIFA's flawless ranking system, Dusseldorf will host a meeting of the world's second and third best sides when France take on Belgium this Monday. Les Bleus could well be considered the second best team on the planet, but they certainly haven't supported that theory at Euro 2024.

A disappointingly flat group stage saw them manage just the one victory and only two goals as Didier Deschamps' men finished beneath Austria. With the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann at their disposal, you would expect more from the 2022 World Cup finalists.

But France have still somehow performed better than the world's third strongest nation Belgium. Even the brilliant Kevin De Bruyne has not been able to prevent a mediocre campaign, or stop Belgian supporters booing the team after they slumped to a dire goalless draw with Ukraine that saw the 2018 World Cup semi-finalists finish behind Romania in Group E.

Portugal vs Slovenia

While Portugal had already topped Group F prior to their clash with Georgia, a 2-0 defeat to the tournament's only debutants is still a little embarrassing. Although, it's not quite as embarrassing as 39-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo throwing a tantrum after dropping another stinker.

Portugal likely won't read too much into defeat to Georgia, but it's not ideal preparation for a battle with another of Euro 2024's minnows in Slovenia.

Having not appeared at the tournament since 2000, Slovenia squeezed into the last 16 after three group stage draws. Bizarrely, they achieved fewer points than Ukraine, who finished rock bottom of their group despite accumulating four points. That's the Euros for you.

A date with France or Belgium (probably France) is to come for Portugal or Slovenia (probably Portugal).

Romania vs Netherlands

Despite having topped their group against the odds, Romania have still been handed a last 16 tie with the Netherlands. Talk about bad luck. Mind, had they finished runners-up they would have played France, and a third-placed finish would have teed up a clash with England.

While the Dutch will be strong favourites for this one, Romania have played with an admirable fearlessness to date. Against a far from convincing Netherlands side, such an approach could ruffle some feathers.

Having finished third in Group D, Ronald Koeman's side cannot afford even a sniff of complacency against Romania. Defeat to Austria, a draw with France and a narrow win over perennial underachievers Poland doesn't scream European champions.

Austria vs Turkey

Austria have probably been Euro 2024's most enjoyable team. Organised like a club side with intense pressing and a fluid attack-minded approach, they shocked France and the Netherlands to top Group D thanks to Ralf Rangnick's tactical nous and a strong core of Bundesliga stars. They've shown how to live up to your dark horse tag.

A side that certainly didn't do that at Euro 2020, Turkey will be Austria's last 16 opponents. Both sides finished on six points in their group, with this arguably the most evenly-matched tie that the last 16 has to offer.

Turkey showed glimpses of their quality during the group stage, scoring some crackers in their opening victory over Georgia. A feisty win over Turkey followed an embarrassing defeat to Portugal, with it still being difficult to assess just how good Vincenzo Montella's side truly are.
