EURO 2024 – Denmark 1-1 England: Ex-Lecce man Hjulmand hits scorcher

Former Lecce midfielder Morten Hjulmand gave Denmark a 1-1 draw with disappointing England, who failed to capitalise on the Harry Kane opener.

A Jude Bellingham goal had allowed his team to scrape past Serbia 1-0 in the opener and Gareth Southgate stuck with the same XI, while the Danes made a few adjustments after a 1-1 draw with Slovenia. There was plenty of Serie A representation from Bologna’s Victor Kristiansen, ex-Atalanta players Rasmus Hojlund and Joakim Maehle and ex-Inter midfielder Christian Eriksen.

It was a quiet start from the two teams, but Harry Kane broke the deadlock when tapping in from close range, as Bologna full-back Kristiansen was caught napping by Kyle Walker and the pull-back took a double deflection to fall into Kane’s path.

Former Lecce midfielder Morten Hjulmand got Denmark back on level terms with a sudden long-range scorcher that squirmed in off the inside of the upright.

England almost restored their advantage after the restart with a Phil Foden effort from outside the box that bounced off the upright, while Jordan Pickford parried the Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg long-range strike.

The Danes looked more likely to take the win as time wore on, with England once again falling away in intensity.

Elsewhere in Group C, Serbia snatched a last-gasp 1-1 draw with Slovenia.
