No canceled flights were going to stop Ethan Hawke from making it to the Toronto International Film Festival premiere of his latest film, Wildcat. The actor’s daughter Maya Hawke, who stars in the film, received clearance to support the film during the SAG-AFTRA strike, which lit more of a fire under him to make it there, even if it meant hopping on a Greyhound bus.

“Three flights canceled, then I was like, ‘I’m not gonna miss this because of some airport,'” Hawke told People on the TIFF red carpet. “So, I went to port authority and hopped the bus.”

While he notes that no one is comfortable on those coaches, he appreciates that “nobody cares about anybody else on the bus.” Passing the time, he says, “I just read my book and disappeared in the back and prayed that we made it.”

Hawke was in the company of his wife and producing partner during the bus ride, and Maya arrived separately.

“To get to be at this festival and to have approval from our union during a strike, to be here and celebrate film and independent film and to get to see this movie in an audience, which is so rare now, is just the ultimate privilege,” the Stranger Things star shared.

Wildcat focuses on the life and work of Flannery O’Connor, the author behind Southern Gothic-lit classics Wise Blood and A Good Man Is Hard to Find. Toggling between the perspective of a father and a daughter, fittingly, the film explores O’Connor’s preoccupations, prose, and creative process.

“If you see anything else tonight, what you’re going to see is a young artist just circle around their father and sprint out the door, pat him on the ass as she goes by,” Hawke told the audience about his daughter’s performance ahead of the film.
