Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has broken the record for the worst start to a Premier League season for the club, for the second successive season.

The Dutchman entered the crucial match against Aston Villa this Sunday needing to relieve the growing pressure around his job.

After a last-gasp equaliser against FC Porto midweek, he escaped with a drab 0-0 draw at Villa Park.

On the surface, a draw at Villa Park in 2024 is not a bad result but it is one in a series of disappointing results for United fans to endure, as they have only won three out of their 11 matches this season.

The point earned in Birmingham leaves the Red Devils 14th in the Premier League after seven games played.

They have amassed a meagre eight points in seven games and have scored only five goals all season, whilst conceding eight.

This statistic is compounded even more by the fact that three of these goals came in the same game against Southampton in a 3-0 victory at St Mary’s Stadium.

In fact, only the Saints have scored fewer goals than Ten Hag’s side in the entire Premier League. This is inexcusable for a club that has gone down in world football folklore for their attacking swagger and goalscoring exploits across the decades.

To make matters worse, this is a worse start for the first team than last year, which was already the worst in the club’s history. Ten Hag has secured one point fewer this time around, setting a new, even more undesirable record.

Responding to the result, Ten Hag claimed that he still had the support of the United hierarchy and that if they were going to sack him, they should have told him already.

However, with owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe present at the game, the noose must surely be tightening around the 54 year old’s neck.

After suffering the embarrassment of only beating Fulham, Southampton and Barnsley so far this season, United fans will be closely following the latest news to see if the much-maligned Ten Hag is finally relieved of his duties at Old Trafford in the coming days.
