Eric Hosmer, KC Royals to release film on 2014 postseason run & 10-year reunion
Former Kansas City Royals star Eric Hosmer still remembers vividly the roar of the sold-out crowd at Kauffman Stadium.
He’ll never forget the electric atmosphere in Kansas City. All eyes were on the 2014 Royals as they sought to make history. It had been 29 long years since they’d last reached the World Series … let alone the playoffs.
With fans screaming and towels waving throughout The K, Hosmer felt the weight of such moments.
“We learned in the postseason — that whole new beginning — new feelings and new jitters that you have to get over,” Hosmer said. “That workout before the wild-card game against Oakland, I just remember 15,000 people at a workout and I’m like, ‘Man, what’s going on?’
“And the next day at the game, when you go live to the national broadcast, whoever was emceeing that day at the stadium said, ‘We are going live in five, four ...”
“And when she got down to one, fans just started waving the towels around. We realized it was a different stage at that point in time.”
Now 34 and retired as a player, Hosmer is helping fans relive such moments. On Tuesday, he and his company — MoonBall Media — and the Royals will release a behind-the-scenes look at the 2014 season and the 10-year reunion they had in KC earlier this year.
The short film will be released at 10 a.m. Central on Royals.com and the Royals’ YouTube account. Fans can find the link here.
“It’s crazy that it’s already been 10 years since that 2014 team’s run,” Hosmer said. “It was fun to be back to celebrate that and see this team playing as well.”
The film will feature interviews from several players on the 2014 team. Fans will hear from former star first baseman Hosmer, outfielder Lorenzo Cain, pitcher Jeremy Guthrie and others.
The current Royals are eager to make another playoff run this year. The 2024 squad is vying to return to the postseason for the first time in eight years — in fact, Hosmer played on the 2015 club that won the World Series, and that team remains the Royals’ most recent to reach the playoffs.
There are a lot of similarities between the 2014 and 2024 Royals. Hosmer is excited to see how the rest of the season unfolds.
“I think it’s going to be fun here down the stretch,” Hosmer said.
