Eric Cantona: Manchester United legend shares his thoughts on the current squad and INEOS

Eric Cantona recently shared his views on Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s involvement with Manchester United, the redundancies within the club, and his thoughts on the current squad.

In an interview with The Athletic, the legendary former United forward touched on various subjects, including his personal journey and his reflections on the changes at Old Trafford.

Cantona’s 2024 has been eventful, with a musical tour, appearances in Euro 2024 adverts, a podcast with Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer, and a role in John Woo’s latest film.

The interview took place at Wapping Power Station, where he was promoting Ford’s new electric car,Capri.

When asked about Ratcliffe, who recently became a minority shareholder in United, Cantona acknowledged his influence.

“They work today on the foundations of the club. It’s important to work on a foundation when you build the house,” Cantona said. He expressed confidence that Ratcliffe is the right person to help Manchester United regain its former glory.

The United legend also addressed the redundancies announced by INEOS, Ratcliffe’s holding company.

The club recently made 250 staff members redundant, a move Cantona accepted as sometimes necessary. “Maybe it was too many people,” he said.

He also commented on the importance of human connection in the workplace, supporting Ratcliffe’s decision to have staff return to the office to boost productivity and morale.

Cantona praised young talents like Lamine Yamal, who impressed during Euro 2024.

He admitted that no one in the United squad stood out as much as Bruno Fernandes. “Sometimes Bruno Fernandes surprises me. Which is good,” he added, highlighting the importance of players who can bring an element of surprise to the game.
