Gareth Southgate has resisted calls to make sweeping changes to his England team to face Slovakia, with Kobbie Mainoo coming in as the only change for the Euro 2024 last-16 clash.

Mainoo replaces Conor Gallagher and starts alongside Declan Rice in midfield in Gelsenkirchen.

Jordan Pickford starts in goal despite injuring his left hand in the warm-up.

Phil Foden, who returned to training on Thursday after briefly returning home for the birth of his third child, keeps his place on the left of the forward line.

Kieran Trippier is fit to start at left-back after missing two days of training this week.

Luke Shaw is named among the substitutes and could see his first action of the tournament from the bench as he pushes to play a key role in the knockout stage.

Southgate has faced calls to make changes to his team following three lacklustre performances in the group stage.

But the England manager has said he is reluctant to rip up his plan, so Anthony Gordon and Cole Palmer are again on the bench.

Mainoo comes into the team following a strong second-half display in the last game against Slovenia.

Pickford plays in front of a back four of Kyle Walker, John Stones, Marc Guehi and Trippier.

Rice and Mainoo are in midfield, with Foden, Jude Bellingham and Bukayo Saka behind Harry Kane.

Bellingham admitted he was “absolutely dead” at the end of the Slovenia group game but he keeps his place in the No10 role.
