Yahoo Sports England want Southgate stay regardless of Euros outcome
England want Gareth Southgate to remain as manager until the 2026 World Cup, regardless of the result of this weekend’s Euro 2024 final.
England take on Spain in Berlin on Sunday as the Three Lions look to win a first major tournament in 58 years. Southgate has guided England to consecutive European Championship finals and a first-ever decider overseas this summer.
Euro 2024 had widely been expected to be the 53-year-old’s final tournament in charge but the FA are keen for Southgate to remain on as manager, even if England are beaten this weekend. Discussions have taken placed between the FA and Southgate to confirm total confidence in the current manager to continue forward into the World Cup cycle.
Southgate has been in charge of England since 2016 and celebrated 100 games in charge of the national team during the 2-1 Euro 2024 semi-final win over the Netherlands on Wednesday.
He is just the third manager to reach 100 games as England manager, after Walter Winterbottom and Alf Ramsey.
His contract is set to officially expire in December but the Times are reporting that the FA will launch a ‘charm offensive’ to persuade Southgate to stay on.
