With their disastrous World Cup campaign firmly in the rear-view mirror, England now have another test of their white-ball credentials as they travel to the West Indies for a limited-overs tour.
The West Indies did not qualify for this year’s World Cup, but this gives England a chance to bounce back after crashing out of the tournament with one win in their first six games.
The England sqaud will take on the home side in three one-day internationals and then five Twenty20 internationals over the course of three weeks in December.
It will be the first time England have played the West Indies in ODIs in more than four years and they will be hoping for a better showing than was produced during a ‘difficult’ time in India.
When is it?
England’s limited-overs tour of the West Indies runs from Sunday December 3 until Thursday December 21. There are no warm-up games so England go straight into the action against the hosts.

Ben Duckett has said that it was “difficult” watching England’s torrid World Cup campaign as he aims to play a major part in “a fresh start” for the one-day international side.
Duckett was not involved in the World Cup but watched all of England’s matches.
“It was tough to watch at times and I’m watching mates go out there and struggle,” he said. “It was really difficult. For me personally I have had six weeks to kind of take a breather – it has been a big 12 months for me – and it might actually be quite refreshing. I feel raring to go now.”
Duckett scored 107 not out, his maiden one-day international century, in England’s last ODI against Ireland in September. While he opens in the Test side, Duckett batted at number four during the matches against Ireland and is set to remain in that position against West Indies, when the three-game ODI series begins in Antigua on Sunday.
Despite England’s World Cup plight, Duckett said that there has been no change in the messaging to the side, with the emphasis upon retaining the method that brought England the 2019 World Cup and last year’s T20 World Cup.
“I don’t think it’s going to be a change because of how the World Cup went,” the Nottinghamshire player said. “It was potentially guys were late 30s and coming towards the end of their 50-over career. So it seemed like there was always going to be a fresh start after it.
“It’s a massive opportunity to show what we can do. I’ve been around and not around the white-ball group for the past however many years and it’s been impossible to break into so for me personally I’m just buzzing to get a go.
“I’m one of the more experienced guys and I’ve played eight games. I need to go and prove that I’m good enough to be on this team and so do the other guys.”
‘A fresh group of players’
England’s squad for the ODI series features just five players who appeared in the World Cup – as well as Brydon Carse, who was called up during the tournament.
“It’s quite a fresh group of players which is really exciting, a similar kind of side who did some pretty special things in that Ireland series,” Duckett said. “For each and every one of us, it’s important to perform and that’s the way we look at it.
“I know how difficult it is to stay in a side when there’s this many players and I think the biggest thing I’ve learnt over the last 12 to 15 months is not thinking too far ahead. I’ve got to go and score runs this series to get to the next one, there’s people banging down the door who aren’t here so I don’t think I’m a shoo-in for the next four years. I’d be silly to think that.”
Phil Salt, the England opener, only arrived in Antigua late on Thursday, owing to a family matter. England will make a later decision on whether to include him in Sunday’s opening ODI.
England have an abundance of batting options for this series. As well as openers Salt and Will Jacks – who could also be tried lower down the order – England will also be keen to be given opportunities to Zak Crawley and Ollie Pope, who will make his ODI debut during the series. Harry Brook and captain Jos Buttler are expected to bat at five and six.
The pitch at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium is expected to offer appreciable turn. This means that England will face similar conditions to those they floundered in during the World Cup in India, when they won just three out of nine games during their title defence.
West Indies are beginning their own rebuild after failing to qualify for the World Cup in India, following defeats to Zimbabwe, Netherlands and Scotland during the qualifying tournament. To add to the side’s worries, wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich has announced his immediate retirement from international cricket. Dowrich was only just recalled to the side, after three years away from the international game. He has not been replaced in the West Indies squad for the three ODIs.
