Results are the name of the game as Tuchel takes charge

Thomas Tuchel officially started his role as the new England manager on New Year’s Day.

The former Chelsea boss now has seven international windows to mould a squad capable of winning the 2026 World Cup in North America.

England failed to win silverware under previous manager Gareth Southgate, and Tuchel will be under pressure to prove he can be the difference-maker.

Southgate’s tactical ineptitude and over-reliance on certain players scuppered his hopes of ending England’s lengthy trophy drought.

Tuchel must be brave with his selections. If big names must be benched to ensure the team is balanced, so be it. As the old saying goes, you can’t make an omelette without breaking eggs.

The German is renowned for being decisive – a trait Southgate undoubtedly lacked in abundance. After decades of failure, results are all that matter.

Tuchel’s penchant for falling out with people may be a Godsend for England. If they can’t win silverware under him, they probably never will.

What to watch

Rangers trail Celtic by 14 points in the Scottish Premiership. Their latest meeting at Ibrox today will unlikely impact the title race but should still provide plenty of drama.
