England, Iceland and father-son heartbreak

Sports have the ability to bring us together, but they also devastate us least as often as not.

In the video above, our own Nick Ashbourne outlines the England soccer fandom that he and his father Simon have shared for more than two decades. It’s a story of heartbreak after heartbreak that culminated in a devastating loss to Iceland the pair witnessed, strangely, in a bar in Denver back in 2016.

“I think an English fan is always, to some degree, ready to lose,” Nick says summing up his relationship with the squad.

English fans haven’t been disappointed at the 2018 World Cup just yet, but if recent history is any indicator it’s just a matter of time.
