Empoli have released a formal statement of apology after the Serie A season opener against Monza was played on an embarrassing pitch.

The Tuscans played out a 0-0 draw with Monza at the Stadio Castellani, which as of this season also has the naming rights of the Computer Gross Arena.

The sponsors presumably weren’t very happy with the state of the turf either, which prompted comments and criticism from fans and media.

Empoli took it on board and released a statement on the club website today trying to clarify what caused the playing surface to cut up so much, with large chunks flying around at every step.

They explained that there was meant to be a treatment for the turf over the summer, but had to be delayed while hosting Italy’s friendly match on June 9, then another tournament was planned there, but moved elsewhere at the last minute.

“For these reasons, the necessary treatment was only made in July, with the pitch in this condition following the Coppa Italia game against Catanzaro and yesterday in Serie A with Monza.

“In apologising once again, we are certain that by the time of the home game against Juventus, the pitch will again be in perfect condition, as it has been in recent years and as appreciated by players and staff.”
