Yahoo Sports Emerson Royal finally breaks silence amid AC Milan links
Tottenham Hotspur right-back Emerson Royal has spoken out for the first time regarding his future at the club amid strong links to Serie A giants AC Milan.
The 25-year-old is a target for the Rossoneri, and the two clubs are in contact to hash out a deal.
Meanwhile, Royal had an interview with Globo, expressing his desire for regular playing time, stating, “I want to play on a regular basis. I don’t want to sit on the bench.”
The Brazilian defender continued, “I’ve always been professional, but I also told the coach (Ange Posetcoglou) at Spurs that I want to play. Otherwise, I have to look at other options.”
When asked about a potential move to Milan, the 25-year-old acknowledged the allure of the Italian club, saying, “AC Milan? It’s a reference point for all Brazilians.”
Royal’s playing time has dropped drastically following the signing of Pedro Porro, with the latter usurping the starting berth.
The Brazilian international was limited to just 11 Premier League starts last term, and some of those appearances came at left-back, deputising for Destiny Udogie.
Royal wants playing time and could find it in Milan. The seven-time UEFA Champions League winners are trying to revamp their right-back position, with Davide Calabria regressing last term and are keen on the former Barcelona man.
There are rumours of Saudi Pro League interest, but it is seemingly only a matter of time before Tottenham and Milan agree a deal for Royal to join Paulo Fonseca’s side.
Tottenham do not need another right-back
With Royal set to leave this summer, there will likely be a temptation to invest in a new right-back, but Spurs must consider holding off. The club should strongly consider internal solutions before splashing the cash.
Spurs signed Archie Gray this summer, and while he is a midfielder by trade, he can provide cover at right-back.
The 18-year-old might not get plenty of games in midfield, but leaving the right-back backup slot open will allow him more time on the field.
Integrating him as a rotational option on the flank would offer depth and give the talented teenager valuable first-team experience.
This approach allows Spurs to save resources for other pressing needs and fosters the growth of a promising young player within their ranks.
