Leon Draisaitl 1st player to 100 points as 'MVP' chants rain down

It’s unlikely Leon Draisaitl’s biggest fans could envision the type of season he’s having this year as he reached another milestone during Saturday’s game against the Winnipeg Jets.

Draisaitl opened the scoring in the first period, tucking away a quick one-timer for his 38th goal of the year, and became the first player to 100 points this season.

It’s no easy feat considering that he plays with Connor McDavid—widely considered to be the NHL’s best player for good reason, but an appreciative home crowd showered Draisaitl with “MVP” chants.

The chants are warranted, too. Although it’s hard to fathom, Draisaitl continued to keep the Oilers’ playoff bid alive when McDavid was out of the lineup due to injury, and prior to Saturday’s game, held an eight-point lead over Boston Bruins star David Pastrnak for the scoring lead.

After posting a 50-goal, 105-point season in 2018-19, Draisaitl is now the seventh Oiler to reach the 100-point marker in two consecutive seasons, joining a group that includes Wayne Gretzky, Jari Kurri, Mark Messier, Glenn Anderson, Paul Coffey and, of course, McDavid.

Not bad company considering all of those players are in the Hall of Fame with multiple rings—with the exception of McDavid, for now.
