Washington Capitals Goalie Logan Thompson Edmonton Oilers Fan Throws a Plate of Nachos on the Ice, Distracting Goalie as Home Team Scores

Talk about a perfectly timed dish!

Edmonton Oilers veteran forward Corey Perry took a unique route to the net during Tuesday night’s game against the Washington Capitals, skating around a plate of nachos a fan had thrown on the ice and slapping a one-timer from teammate Leon Draisaitl past goalie Logan Thompson.

Perry, 39, and his cheesy finish drew the Oilers within a goal of the Capitals, but they ultimately lost the game 3-2, despite the assist from their hometown crowd.

"That's a first," Capitals coach Spencer Carbery said after the game, according to ESPN. "We just talked about that in the coaches' office. I don't think I've ever seen a nachos-on-the-ice National Hockey League game. Did they save them? Maybe we can bring them into the locker room."

Perry’s first-of-its-kind goal briefly led to some confusion and debate on the ice. Thompson, 27, immediately threw up his arms and began complaining about the loose plate distracting him during the play.

However, according to NHL rules, the object on the ice didn’t appear to disrupt the flow of the play, leading referees to let the play continue and allow the goal to stand.

“There’s shrapnel on the ice and the Caps are upset about it!” Sportsnet broadcaster Jack Michaels passionately analyzed afterwards as a replay of the goal was shown. “Yeah, those nachos were already there. And I don’t think Logan Thompson can say, ‘I lost the puck in the nachos.’ “

Sportsnet color commentator Louie DeBrusk then earnestly responded: “No, no. If it would’ve ticked it somehow or deflected off of it, different story. But it had no impact, in my opinion, whatsoever.”

Meanwhile, two members of the Oilers’ ice crew had to come onto the ice to pick up the rest of the chips and scrape the globs of cheese off the ice.

Perry could be seen smiling after the goal was allowed, as Thompson and other Capitals players continued to debate with the referees over whether the odd play should stand. “I didn’t even see them,” Perry said after the game, noting he was “focused on the play.”

Other players, like Oilers’ forward Zack Hyman, were visibly laughing about the incident as they hugged each other and provided the home fans with a celly con queso.

Thompson later took the blame for losing his focus and allowing the goal, though he still appeared mystified: "I've never seen that before,” the goalie told reporters.
