Duke basketball has a road game set up for next season that’s notable in numerous ways
Duke and Army West Point have agreed to a unique basketball game on a meaningful day next season.
The Blue Devils will travel to West Point, New York, to play the Black Knights in an on-campus Veterans Day clash on Nov. 11, 2025, at 5,043-seat Christl Arena.
Duke last visited Army West Point for a regular-season game in 1997. The programs have met seven times since then, all at Cameron Indoor Stadium, and all Blue Devils wins. That includes Friday night’s 100-58 Duke win over Army.
“It’s always an honor to compete against Army,” Duke coach Jon Scheyer said in a statement, “but we’re incredibly excited to have the opportunity to play at Army next year on Veterans Day in honor of all those who have served in our military. It’s a privilege to have the opportunity to play at West Point, to be in their culture, to be tested on the road early in the season, and to experience something that’s more meaningful than just a basketball game.”
Duke has occasionally played smaller Division I teams away from Cameron Indoor Stadium, but not at that school’s on-campus arena, like when facing Davidson at Charlotte’s Spectrum Center or UNC-Greensboro at Greensboro Coliseum.
That’s what makes this planned trip to West Point notable, along with the symbolism of playing there on Veterans Day, a federal holiday established to honor American veterans of all wars.
For the past two decades, Duke chose only to play nonconference games on a team’s on-campus home court when assigned as part of an event, like the ACC-Big Ten Challenge or its successor, the ACC-SEC Challenge. That’s changing this season when the Blue Devils play at Arizona on Nov. 22, the second game of a home-and-home series that began at Cameron Indoor Stadium last season.
But, prior to the Arizona trip, the last time Duke scheduled a non-conference game in a true road venue was in 2001 when the Blue Devils played at Michigan.
When Duke last visited West Point in 1997, former Army player and head coach Mike Krzyzewski was in the midst of his Hall of Fame tenure coaching the Blue Devils. Though Scheyer took over for the retired Krzyzewski in 2022, the bonds between Army and Duke remain strong.
“Our program has had a longtime connection to Army with Coach K,” Scheyer said, “and I’ve learned every year I’ve been at Duke as a player and assistant coach under Coach K about the principles and values that were instilled in him during his time at West Point. It’s going to be a special day celebrating our two programs and all those who have served in our armed forces.”
