Dream fantasy football landing spots for NFL free agents

With the NFL legal tampering period here and the official start of free agency on Wednesday (March 16), our analysts reveal their dream landing spot for one free agent.

Clear the path for Javonte Williams

Scott Pianowski: While Andy wants chaos below, I want two simple things and I can be happy. Melvin Gordon signs anywhere but Denver. We need Javonte Williams as a super sophomore, the featured back in an offense now piloted by Russell Wilson (and it's a non-running Wilson these days). Yahtzee.

And although Gardner Minshew isn't a free agent until next year, I'm going to force him into this conversation. I want him traded somewhere fun. Pittsburgh could be fun. Maybe Carolina could be fun. Seattle, depending on what's left, could be fun. Heck, anywhere Gardner Minshew starts will be fun, I'm sure of it. Look at his stats. If he were a pedigree draft pick, he'd be seen as someone's future. He deserves a chance, somewhere.

Allen Robinson finally gets the QB he deserves

Matt Harmon: All I dream about is Allen Robinson filling the outside receiver role for the Kansas City Chiefs. There will be plenty of teams willing to throw a bag at Robinson, ready to wave off a down season amid injuries, COVID and another nightmare Bears’ offense. He certainly wasn’t at his best last year but who could blame him for not leaving it all on the field for Chicago when they were so ambivalent about his contract status after catching 200 passes between 2019 and 2020? Robinson has never played with even an average starting quarterback to this point in his career. A wandering of misery like that deserves at least a short stint in the quarterback promised land with Patrick Mahomes. Not to mention, the Chiefs badly need another player who can win outside and bring size to their receiver room. Robinson still has the technical chops to be that missing piece.

More help for Mahomes, Chiefs

Liz Loza: Three years removed from his lone 1,000+ yard season, the debate over whether or not JuJu Smith-Schuster is a No. 1 WR has been decided. That doesn't mean, however, that the 25-year-old doesn't still presents fantasy value. A rugged receiver who excels in the red area of the field, Smith-Schuster converted 15 of 18 red zone looks (WR7) in 2020, before missing Weeks 6-18 of 2021 with a shoulder injury. His ceiling is certainly capped, but were he to land in KC— a team that could greatly benefit from consistent WR2 play — Smith-Schuster could easily clear 70 grabs and post top-30 fantasy numbers.

Penny worth the risk for the Falcons

Dalton Del Don: How about Rashaad Penny to the Falcons? Atlanta’s backfield is as wide open as any in the league, and there should be improvements in year two from both coach Arthur Smith and Kyle Pitts. Penny ran for 671 yards (7.3 YPC) and six touchdowns over the final five games last season and finished leading the NFL in rush yards over expectation. He remains a big injury risk, but Penny could also be a fantasy monster if he could handle a bigger workload with the backfield to himself in Atlanta.

Bring on the chaos

Andy Behrens: I desperately hope Melvin Gordon re-signs with Denver and takes another 200-or-so carries. It's really all I want for the NFL in 2022. Yes, I am choosing chaos.
